On Becoming a Teacher

My Concrete Experience

  1. Who am I as a person? Do I have personal qualities that would make me a better teacher someday?
  2. With the use of the checklist find out your personal characteristics which would help you make become a good teacher. The qualities listed are few of the many attributes needed but the list given you would suffice.

Look into yourself very well and answer each item very honestly. All your answers are correct, so you do need to worry.

AM I THIS PERSON?

Below are indicators of personal qualities which may describe you. Place a ___ mark on the blank before each item if the indicator gits you most of the time or an ___ mark if the description does not fit you most of the time.

My Observations

Your concrete experience, enabled you to describe, what you are as a person. The qualities reflect who you are. Make a similar observation of ten active teachers in a school. Your observation will be done through a survey and will produce empirical evidences. This observation method will enhance your skills to collect data, like when you doing research.

You will be provided with a Survey Checklist for you to produce 10 copies for your 10 respondent teachers. (They are on the last pages of this workbook). Make a proper request from these teachers who will become your respondents.

The Observed Information

Procedure:

  1. To get the average, add the scores of the ten teachers and divide by 10.
  2. Look at the legend in your own checklist, and determine the description of the average.

Study the results.

Questions:

  1. Which of the twelve attributes is the highest among the teachers?
  • Among the 12 attributes, buoyancy is the one that excel from among the high description with point one as a difference.
  1. Which of the twelve attributes is the lowest among the teachers?
  • The self-confidence is having the lowest among the 12 with 3.5 as an average.
  1. How many teachers are low in emotional stability?
  • Teacher Number 3 was the only one who has the lowest grade in terms of emotional stability.
  1. How many teachers are high in compassion?
  • Most of the teachers already reach the very high in compassion; meanwhile two of them didn’t reach that peek.
  1. What six attributes are found to be strong among the teachers?
  • Based on the Average of the whole attributes these six attributes are buoyancy, objectiveness, compassion, emotional stability, refinement and comparativeness with a tie total with that of Reliability
  1. What six attributes are found to be weal among the teachers?
  • As the opposite answer in number seven, these six attributes with a weak average are the self-confidence, self-motivation, intelligence, pleasantness, and comparativeness as well reliability can also be consider as one of them.
  1. What interesting observations can you spot from the other data not asked?
  • The cooperativeness in answering the questionnaire makes me so thankful to the teachers who answered it wilfully.
  • Happy. This is the one factor that I could consider that would bring your class in a good atmosphere and soothing for learning because learners drawn with this kind of aura.

Use the information from your personal results and those of the ten teachers in making your reflections that follow.

My Reflections

After studying the results of your teacher survey, write down your reflection on the following situations reported to have happened in the school setting.

  1. Why are some teachers reported to have bumped a learner’s head on the wall or made a child swallow scratch paper or pencil filings? What attribute do you think is low for this teacher?
  • Emotional Stability. Based on the checklist under this attribute, it is all stated there the things that relates with a teacher’s temper. Once a teacher doesn’t have this kind of trait, they tend to do this without thinking too much. We cannot avoid losing our temper in some action as a person, but the thing is, we need to place them in an appropriate place. For this reason, a teacher should act and be more or less a mother that can stop their children without putting them in too much pressure. They are a child, making them swallow scratch paper or pencil filings as form of punishment will just make them loose their confidence that would affect them in the future.
  1. Why do you think some teachers are better loved by students than others?
  • In order to attract students, you need to have a heart and a certain attitude that would attract them. From among the attributes, I would say a teacher need to reach a high level of COMPASSION and OBJECTIVENESS. As a teacher you need to be at your best at anytime, you need to have happy disposition and appreciate students within your class. A Happy disposition can attract people, and this is also applicable with the students. One said that children are the best one to sense the feeling of others around them. So giving them an atmosphere that give them an ease, and learn the meaning of positive living will give them a boost to make their life in a better. A better influence will also be spread to the students, who will be drawn by this kind of feeling. As a teacher, you need to be more objective. Treating a certain situation in fairness is a must, in order for them to feel of being judged fairly, and will not lose their confidence in a certain situation. Children also need to be brought up in a way that they could learn a high value of fairness, and to whom they could look up to this aside from their parents? Their teacher.
  1. If you were to choose, which personal attributes should all teachers possess? Why?
  • I would say, a teacher should have a compassion, emotional stability, and self confidence. A teacher should have a heart. What’s good of having a brain with the heart that is full of nothingness? We, human are very expressive people towards other person. This is the reason why s/he needs to reach them through kindness, and our heart needs to function in a way that could understand the human heart. In the future, we need some people who need to spread love around the people, kindness towards others and a teacher could teach that to the students. A self restrain is needed in order to reach what we want for others. Unselfishness is also a must, so anger should be put in the appropriate situation. To act kindness and the courage to control your anger, self confidence is a must. Doubting once self of acting goodness to other is a toxic why of thinking. Confidence is needed in order to implement an effective teaching to ones’ students.

My Affirmed Concepts

After reflecting on this episode and recalling my previous subjects, I have realized that there are several concepts in the teaching profession about personal attributes. I learned that has been affirmed and confirmed, examples of which are given below:

  1. When I was a student, I look up for those teachers who taught me as someone to be always prepared, and that they are the same from inside the classroom and outside, but it was not. From this experience alone, I did observe a teacher who was very different when she handled the class from the way she acted outside. This teacher holds out a humble and weak personality outside the class as I perceive it, but when she is inside the room, she is boosting with confidence. Her teaching style is very admirable since she can hide those weaknesses when she is in front of her students. As a part of the attitudes, this self-confidence is important enough in delivering your lesson to your students in order for them to be drawn by your teaching skill. I did realize this part after observing this certain teacher, which I really appreciate the way she handle herself in front of many learners and made me think of how this thing is important.
  1. There was an instant where a teacher suddenly called out those noisy kids inside the classroom and let them ask to go outside at the school were we currently observing. This teacher does this as punishment for those noisy kids. I didn’t experienced this when I was a student myself, but I did observe this kind of treatment from a teacher back then, who uses this style to punish them. Sometimes, there are those students who really are noisy, even how a teacher disciplined and warned them, they just do it. I could not blame the teacher for doing this like of punishment due to the reason that they can no longer handle this kind of attitude in class. Adopting this kind of punishment is better than hitting the kids with eraser nor making them ate some pencil filing to make this shut,

My Future Application

Using what I have learned in this episode, when I become a teacher, I should learn some of this attributes in order to implement this to my students. If God’s well that I’ll be a lecturer to some learners, I would like to learn this attributes and have a restrain factor with my temper when I become one. One thing that I have learned from this episode is that, teaching should have a heart. Teaching doesn’t only mean just teaching, but it is further than this kind of thing. It made me understand the real meaning of being a teacher is to have a good value within thy self as a teacher. In this way, I became more aware of what are the things I should do for myself that would be applied to my students. Starting on this day, I need to have a self evaluation, and consider this attributes to be enhanced as I go along with this line of profession. In the near future, I would love to teach kids and make them realize of those beautiful things in this world, and become more positive in life. Fate will bring us all to the places where we should be, and I am praying to Allah (swt) that if this is good for me, hope He will fulfill my desire to help myself and become a tool for a change through imparting knowledge to the young ones.

Learning Assessment Strategies

This post is based on my field study that I did conduct last three months for the year 2014. You may seem not to approve some of this idea, but please correct me if I am wrong. Most of the things contain here were based on my own opinion. I am very welcome to some ideas that you may share on this subject matter. Thank you and hope it will be a help for those people in search for the same studies.

My Tools

As I observe a class, I will use the Observation Sheet for a more focused observation.

OBSERVATION SHEET Number 1

Principles of Learning Assessment Teaching Behavior of the Teacher/Learning Behavior of the Learner as Proof of the Application of the Principle of Learning
  1. Assessment is an integral part of the teaching learning process.

The Teacher gave out a quiz to her students worth 20 points on Basic Geometry Figure and Angles.
  1. Assessment tool/activity should match with performance objective.

The tool that was being used by the teacher was an objective test that blends in with the students’ performance.
  1. The results of assessment must be fed back to the learners.

After the quiz, the teacher let the students check the papers of their fellow classmate, and right after that, was being returned in order for the students to see their score.
  1. Teachers must consider learners’ learning styles and multiple intelligences and so must come up with a variety of ways of assessing learning.

While the teacher was giving out the answers to the students, she was also asking them orally before she explains them that answer to that certain question.
  1. Give some positive feedback along with not so good ones.

The teacher gave out a positive feedback to those students who get good grades and advice those students who didn’t do well to study more.
  1. Emphasize on self assessment.

Upon seeing the scores of each student themselves, they will now realize if they did study will or not. As for the result of the test, the teacher can identify her teaching if she did will or not.
  1. Assessment of learning should never be used as punishment or as disciplinary measure.

The Teacher’s test was not for punishment or as a disciplinary one. A verification whether the student study their lesson or not.
  1. Emphasize on real world application that favors realistic performances over out-of-context drills.

Applicable in the real world, because they will use this basic geometry figures and angles when they go on with their studies and apply it when measuring of shapes are involved.
  1. Results of learning assessment must be communicated regularly to parents.

The teacher did mention that as much as she is capable of. She is indeed letting their parents know their status on their grades.

OBSERVATION SHEET Number 2

Principles of Learning Assessment Teaching Behavior of the Teacher/Learning Behavior of the Learner as Proof of the Application of the Principle of Learning
  1. Assessment is an integral part of the teaching learning process.

The teacher gave out their tentative score, and the result of their assignment for them to verify within their self if the student themselves did their best.
  1. Assessment tool/activity should match with performance objective.

The teacher used assignment in order to assist if the students were doing their homework, and mostly they did. However, this type of assessment is not guaranteed.
  1. The results of assessment must be fed back to the learners.

The teacher handed out the students’ assignment together with their score, as well as their tentative score from their exams.
  1. Teachers must consider learners’ learning styles and multiple intelligences and so must come up with a variety of ways of assessing learning.

That time, the teacher handed them down the result of their assignment and exam results.
  1. Give some positive feedback along with not so good ones.

The teacher didn’t give out any feedback to the students’ result. She just gave the result without saying anything.
  1. Emphasize on self assessment.

Without the feedback from the teacher, the learners are now the one to assess themselves either they do good or not.
  1. Assessment of learning should never be used as punishment or as disciplinary measure.

The teacher somehow doesn’t apply this harsh assessment for the student. It is more on academically.
  1. Emphasize on real world application that favors realistic performances over out-of-context drills.

Since they are in electromagnetic as a topic, they can apply this drill when the students were curious about a certain situation that relates with this topic.
  1. Results of learning assessment must be communicated regularly to parents.

The teacher ask the students to hand out a 1/8 sheet of paper with the student’s name on it, in order for her to write their tentative score and give to their respective parents for them to see.

OBSERVATION SHEET Number 3

Principles of Learning Assessment Teaching Behavior of the Teacher/Learning Behavior of the Learner as Proof of the Application of the Principle of Learning
  1. Assessment is an integral part of the teaching learning process.

The teacher let the student participate in solving problem, making her aware the effectively of her teaching from her students.
  1. Assessment tool/activity should match with performance objective.

The teacher used oral recitations in solving the problem in front of the class that coincide with her tools.
  1. The results of assessment must be fed back to the learners.

Some students didn’t do well, coming up with a wrong answer, making that certain student to be aware to study the lesson more.
  1. Teachers must consider learners’ learning styles and multiple intelligences and so must come up with a variety of ways of assessing learning.

The teacher was driven by her motivation to teach her students, aiming for the student to be more confident and given an ease atmosphere for everyone while answering the problem.
  1. Give some positive feedback along with not so good ones.

The teacher was giving a complement to those students who answered correctly. For those who didn’t do well were given an encouragement to try again from the teacher herself.
  1. Emphasize on self assessment.

The learners’ reaction of being participative mood is an indication that they understand the lesson that was being taught to them by her.
  1. Assessment of learning should never be used as punishment or as disciplinary measure.

The teacher didn’t give the solving problem and letting them to discuss it as a form of punishment, but a review for the upcoming exam. The activity was beneficial for the student.
  1. Emphasize on real world application that favors realistic performances over out-of-context drills.

They will need this lesson for further lessons, and can be applied in their daily life in a certain situation that needed equation, and not to be ignorant when they pass this kind of topic in some mathematic readings.
  1. Results of learning assessment must be communicated regularly to parents.

The teacher give the students’ assignment score, and their result of the examination in order for the kids to show it to their parents.

My Analysis

What are the possible consequences on the teaching-learning process if each of the principles are not observed.

Principles of Learning Assessment Possible Consequences if Principle NOT Observed
1         Assessment is an integral part of the teaching learning process. Teacher won’t know if his/her students are learning well from his/her class.
2         Assessment tool/activity should match with performance objective. The objective of the learning will not meet if the activity/tool didn’t match. The learning objective will be useless, and more confusion for the students.
3         The results of assessment must be fed back to the learners. If this won’t be applied, the learners will assume everything, and therefore there is no room for their realization of doing better in class.
4         Teachers must consider learners’ learning styles and multiple intelligences and so must come up with a variety of ways of assessing learning. It will be unfair for those students who don’t have fast learning skills. Also, students will not develop and enhanced in their respective skills.
5         Give some positive feedback along with not so good ones. If a teacher won’t give a positive feedback the students desire to learn will not raise up.
6         Emphasize on self assessment.

If there is no self-assessment, then there is no room for advance learning.
7         Assessment of learning should never be used as punishment or as disciplinary measure. The learners will develop fear in the class; some student will be forced out of their will. Learning is not about coercing!
8         Emphasize on real world application that favors realistic performances over out-of-context drills. The expectation of the student will not meet. Learners definitely wanted to know if this thing will be useful or not, if it is, learning on their part will be excitement. Higher thinking skills will not be enhanced.
9         Results of learning assessment must be communicated regularly to parents. The parent will assume that their child is doing great at their school. No advice that will come out for them for their child and it will be unfair to them. No transparency and accountability to reflect on.

   My Reflections

As a student, do I remember any incident when any of these principles was/were violated by my teachers? How did it affect my classmates and me?

  • Yes, there were some. As far as I remember, there was that one instances where in, we as a students were very noisy, the teacher can’t help it but to reach her temper in a maximum level, and out of her irritation, she gave us a quiz as a form of punishment on our part. In this, she violated the number 7 principle “Assessment of learning should never be used as punishment or as disciplinary measure.”

My Portfolio

Present the principles of assessment of learning in a very creative way.

WHAT’S THE CURRICULUM MADE OF?

This post is based on my field study that I did conduct last three months for the year 2014. You may seem not to approve some of this idea, but please correct me if I am wrong. Most of the things contain here were based on my own opinion. I am very welcome to some ideas that you may share on this subject matter. Thank you and hope it will be a help for those people in search for the same studies.

My Map

For this concept, go through the following steps.

  1. Interview a school administrator / faculty about how they concertize their school’s vision and goals into the curriculum.
  2. Visit a school and find out how they attain the aims of elementary, secondary and tertiary education.
  3. Interview one or two students and ask them their school’s vision / mission.
  4. Record the different methods. Strategies that they employed to attain their school’s objectives

My Tools

For this Episode, visit a school / university or get a copy of the school brochure. Copy the school / university’s vision, mission and goals on this page.

VISION

A Globally Competitive Institution of Higher Learning. Distinguished by its commitment to the total development of man through quality education. Islamic values and Advance learning concepts, methods and systems.

MISSION

The RC-AL Khwarizmi International College shall provide high quality of advance, professional and technical education to Muslims and other youths in the Philippines thereby serving as a catalyst of Development of the Muslim Communities especially in the ARMM through instruction research and extension services.

My Analysis

  1. How important is the school’s vision, mission, and goals in designing the curriculum?
  • In human life, a goal/plan should be created in order to have his/her guide on how her/his life supposed to be or how s/he wants it to be. A curriculum should be in the same status. An objective is needed in order to direct the change in behaviour of the students which is the aim of learning, to change a person to a better citizen. A curriculum should entail this, and in order to create a path for a certain objective, they need to create a vision that redirects the institutions would be like to be in the future. A mission that aims the student on what they will become after being educated, and a goal that tends to set the intents of those things to be accomplished.
  1. What methods and strategies were employed by the school community to realize these goals?
  • As per observed at their institution, they are providing all the necessities that the students needs, for them to learn in an ease environment. Other than this, they mostly employed teachers who are highly qualified and well motivated to teach the learner what they supposed to know. The administrators were also doing as much as they could to communicate some educators outside the Philippine in order to send the highly qualified students to the United States of America to learn more. In terms of their students, they seem to be vibrant kids, full of enthusiast. Confidence can be sense from them and inside the class; they wear a brimming energy of interest in learning.
  1. How did the students manifest that they have internalized their vision, mission and goals?
  • As seen in the third year pearl, students were giving out a well mannered attitude as model students. You can sense how well they put/pose their self in a more professional way even they were just a third year student. The principal, Ms. Imelda Mamangconi was always praise this set of group for being doing well in their academic status, and it can also be seen in the observation we did see on that day. Due to excellence that they are projecting, some of them were given the opportunity to be sent in the USA to learn further.

My Reflections/My Insights

Curriculum is a life blood of education as I perceive as I’ve learned gradually in Educ 15s. The important aspect in learning. Upon creating this so called curriculum. Administrator of a certain school should implement their mission, vision and objective as bases in making/creating good curriculum. The administrators have this responsibility in developing such matter because they are dealing with the interest of their learner, which could affect their whole future.

The school that we did observe were very accommodating, and even gave us permission to roam around their premises. In AKIC-SLS, we roam around in order to observe how they put this VISION, MISSION and GOALS inside the campus, however it was kind of frustrating since it wasn’t displayed anywhere the outskirt of the school except inside the learners’ classroom. So far we indeed observe three sections from elementary and secondary level. Two of the room namely Grade VI and 3rd year level display’s the VISION and MISSION inside the room as a part of their decoration inside the room. However, the display of VISION and MISSION are highly advice to place these aspects about the school inside the premises of the campus in order to be transparent to its reader especially for those parents. Furthermore, the school should as well put the GOAL/OBJECTIVE inside the campus and in the classroom. This school failed to implement this important aspect in promoting the school, as well as instilling to the young minds of their children for guidance throughout their school life.

Technology in the Learning Environment

My Map

With a lot of reflective thinking coupled with your creativity, you can design hand-outs that will truly work well to make the learning effective. You will see that preparing hand-outs is not just any paper work. When you produce high quality hand-outs and eventually try them out, you will discover that, indeed, paper works! To reach your target, follow the steps below.

 1. Prepare handouts for a selected topic (ie. Flowcharts, schema, graphic organizers

2. Describe your hand outs.

3. Present it to your FS teacher before reproducing it.

As you prepare your hand outs, use the activity form below.

Hand-out Planning Guide
  1. What topic do I like to work on?
  2. For what grade or year level is my hand out?
  3. What components do include in my outline?
  4. What type of graphic organizers/flow-charts/schemas do I need to use?
  5. What references do I use?

HAND OUT PLAN

Subject Matter: The Great Three Wars in the 20th Century

 My Analysis

After working on your handout, answer the following questions:

What are the good features of a handout?

  • There are so many so many ways that this hand outs could give out a good features in relations to one’s presentation and this could summarize as follows:
  • Create a positive impression before the presentation begins
  • Ensure that the audience takes away the key ideas as intended
  • Engage people at a deeper level as they interact with the handout
  • Keep the audience’s attention focused on the subject
  • Satisfy the needs of visual learners
  • Introduce experiential material for kinesthetic learners
  • Present information at both novice and expert levels
  • Simplify and navigate complex information
  • Establish credibility
  • Present more information than can be covered in the presentation
  • Summarize and review

Which of these features are present in the handout I made?

  • Create a positive impression before the presentation begins
  • Ensure that the audience takes away the key ideas as intended
  • Satisfy the needs of visual learners
  • Summarize and review

Which features are not present in the handout I made?

  • Engage people at a deeper level as they interact with the handout
  • Simplify and navigate complex information
  • Present more information than can be covered in the presentation

My Reflections

  1. What difficulties, if any, did you encounter in making the handouts? How did you overcome them?
  • The difficult thing that I did encounter in making the handouts was when I was choosing the important facet of the subject matter to be included. It’s not about putting all the information in your hand outs, but putting the words with sense. Too much information could burn out the readers. Doing so might make them think that it is much better to give them a book instead of a handout.
  1. What tips can you give teachers regarding preparation of handouts?
  • Making a hand outs is very important in order to give the teachers and the learners a guide that they could follow while the class is ongoing. Making an outline in relation to this will benefit the teacher to follow a certain topic in sequence because without it, a teacher might discuss or present the subject matter in a way that might lead to non- sequential arrangement of the topic that could lead to confusion on the part of the learners.

My Portfolio

Paste a copy of your hand-out here.

Ideology

A fundamental belief system concerned with the nature of society’s political, social, and economic arrangements and the role of individuals and groups within these arrangements.

                THREE POWERFUL IDEOLOGIES

  1. Democracy
  • An Ideology calls for a population to select its governmentand hold that government accountable to the peoplethrough elections
  1. Communism
  • Enamated from the writings of Karl Marx (1818-1883),a nineteenth-century socialist. Marx though history moved forward by economic forces involving class exploitation and conflict
  1. Fascism
  • A totalitarian structure, but its content in values is entirely different from that of communism.

                 SECOND WORLD WAR (1939-1945)

  • Began with Germany’s and Russia’s attack on Poland in 1939 and ended in 1945 with unconditional surrender of the German and Japanese.
  • Italy switched sides to join the Allied.
  • The Allies fought hard to win because fascism threatened not only the independence of many states but their way of life as well.

                AFTER THE SECOND WORLD WAR

  • Western Allies brought democratic reforms to West Germany, and the United States did the same in Japan
  • Soviet Union moved energetically to spread its ideological system to eastern Europe and to East Germany and to lead their own alliance in this region to counter Western Power.

                COLD WAR (1947-1989)

  • The United States and the Soviet Union had a cool relationship long before 1917, when Lenin’s communists took control.
  • The Cold War were created an atmosphere of extreme tension and hostility. A move by either side caused fear and suspicion on the part of the other.

An Observation

  1. To clarify on this part, in the since that I am not yet in the teaching world or practised teaching, I will relate this question on the teacher that we did observed last February 2, 2014, whose name was ISHAQ PUNDOMA. He is a teacher on the subject matter chemistry. The teacher used Manila paper in discussing his topic in relation to LIPIDS and other science vocabulary. He used the white board as well in order to show the students on the segregation of chemicals; eg. Molecules and its division. The resource teacher utilizes the materials inside the class very well, and as of the topic he was discussing was somehow composed of the information he gathered in certain book that was advised by the school for that certain subject matter to be used, and could also be found in their own library.
  2. The materials being used was applicable for the fourth year level in the since that they are now grown up. The Manila paper that was being used as a visual was good IMs for him to use with an indication of his outline for the discussion on that day. It was easy for the student what to expect on that day and recall their past lesson. The subject matter that was being handed to them was suited to her level since it is in the curriculum of the said level.
  3. The possible that the resource teacher could use aside from visual aid, white board and black board are the following:
    1. Power Point Presentation
    2. Pictures
    3. Object that can be made out of styrophome and other materials
    4. Video/Movie
    5. Others
  4. In the discussion of Sir Pundoma, he can also use a poster, cut outs, or even utilizing their media room for the learner to be more exposed to the subject maters, where they could gain the concept in an easier way.

My Analysis

Give at least three benefits of doing a survey of available materials before making your own materials? Explain each.

  1. You’ll be far more prepared for the materials you needed, and if there were lacking in the planned materials at least you can do and have an alternative resource materials you need to use. As a teacher one need to utilize the available materials within the environment.
  2. It will not give you stress when you’re already on the day of your meeting with your class. You have at least days to prepare your materials in a well created craft.
  3. If there is a need in changing your subject matter on that day due to lackings of material, you can still have the time to do so.

My Reflections

  1. Which of the materials did you like making the most? Why?
  • In the resources that I did observed, one thing that i did really like is through using a presentation through power point. This idea came to me when I already started learning here in St. Michael’s College. As I consider, utilizing this kind of material can cause a good visual learning for the kids, since most of the kids are best in learning through seeing. Aside from this, through the given idea by the master teachers last March 8, they did given us some good ideas which we could adopt in teaching our kids in the future and one of this is the so called MNEMONIC. (Since, I am not yet in the teaching world, I could base upon what I did observed and known from the three months session from this learning.)
  1. What difficulties, if any, did you encounter in making the material? How did you overcome them?
  • Based on my realization, the hardest part in making the material is the idea on how will you present it to the students. Either they like it or not. Are they going to gain learning from this materials that I am using? Will they understand my discussion through it? These are some possible questions that suddenly popped out when I am making my own presentation to the class. On how you’re going to outline your topic based on your subject in a way that kids could get it is the hardest part since that, the way you understand things is very different from the way they understand it. This cause the teacher to think their needs and think of the possible aspect that could be more applicable to them
  1. What tips can you give teachers regarding preparation of teaching materials?
  • The simplest tips that I could give for the teachers regarding preparation of teaching materials is that, they need to prepare it ahead of time. In order to change something on the materials with allotted time if they needed to do so for the betterment of the learners’ understanding when the teacher is going to present it.

Class Observation Guide

Read the following statements carefully before you observe.

  1. What is the lesson about?
  2. What visual aids/materials/learning resource is the teacher using?
  3. Observe and take notes on how the teacher presents/uses the learning resources.
  4. Closely observe the learner’s response to the teacher’s use of the learning resources. Listen to their verbal responses. What do their responses indicate? Do their responses show attentiveness, eagerness and understanding?

Focus on their non-verbal responses. Are they learning forward showing their interest on the lesson and the materials? Are they looking towards the direction of the teacher and the materials? Do their actions show attentiveness, eagerness and understanding?

Class Observation

Preschooler on Learning Side
Preschooler on Learning Side

For a couple of Sundays, I and my co-classmates did observed classes from different grade levels. It was kind enough that Ma’am Imelda Mamangconi, the Principal of AKIC-SLS was very accommodating towards our observation at their school. On this regard, I am indeed choosing the preschooler as my area of observation on this episode of FS 3 due to so many reasons.

Every classes has their own way of Instructional Materials, and they indeed show a different kinds of IMs, but what I am amazed the most was the preschoolers’ Instructional Materials. They have this colourful class that you can almost see different colour from different areas from their classroom. If I could compare them from the higher level, theirs were the most outstanding than any other. Perhaps, this is due to their standing point as a new learner, which most of what they encounter is very new to them. Preschoolers have the most sensitive senses among the learners, and they still need a lot of things in order to understand some of their environment. In order to introduce this to them, teachers are required to show them what is attracting for the children in a more fun, colourful and innovative way.

The class I did observed last February 16, 2014 was a senior kindergarten section Saturn. When I did enter to their classroom, I did ask a permission from the assistant teacher named Rahman Abdullah, a graduate of MSU-Main with a course of AB-Filipino. I told her that I was given consent from the principal to observe their classes, with a warm welcome, she indeed let me in inside their rooms and to my surprise I just “wow” myself from those things that were being displayed inside their room. Upon entering, everybody of them greeted me with a loud voice and an additional charming coming from the children. Below this are some pictures of Instructional materials within the class the I did gathered:

I’ll be enumerating some of their set Instructional Materials Inside. Let me have first the teacher, for they are a best IM for the learners. The Section that I did go to was under Ms. Norjannah K. Hadji Ali, the coordinator of the preschooler department. The teacher there was then their Arabic teacher. As she started her class, she did give out a loud and clear voice. She instructed the students to read the Arabic alphabets. All the preschoolers, obeyed as per instructed by the teacher wilfully, and as I view from the way they read, they seem to really familiarized and memorized almost all the Arabic alphabets. The teacher then gave out an activity that will ensure that the learner get the idea and learned it through instructing them to give an example of every Arabic letter that she would show to them. This answering portion was teamed up by group called: Green, Red, Yellow, and the Blue Team. To give them motivation, the teacher used the star as a way of recognizing their effort. Most of the students were really participating; some of them sometimes over do their action by giving the answer without the teacher’s permission. The way the teacher speaks was really loud and clear, which can be understood by the students well, and her projection was really good. This goes as well to the Assistant Teacher Ms. Rahma Abdullah, who gives out a very interesting friendly aura for the students, and always making herself clear.

For those things inside the classroom, they gave out a friendly environment for the kids. The set instructional materials were very clear and colourful for the preschoolers to be more interested. There is that certain part in their classroom, where plastic boxes were in shelves. We indeed ask about this to a certain teacher about those and she mentioned that those boxes were children extra shirts and materials just in case they get their self dirty along their school days. These materials were already instructed to the parents to buy those things for their kids for the whole school year.

Beside this boxes were a table containing some colour cups for the kids. These IMs were being used for the specific kids who like to have a different snack during their recess time. During that period, the school is providing some snacks for the kids. However, there are those kids who are very picky in relation to what they eat, so this idea were being made up in order to cater the other needs of the kids.

After these IMs, one single computer was being set up at the back. This is used by the teacher in making their examination for the kids. All the preschoolers’ teachers were welcome to use this computer for school purposes.

There are three tables that you can observe from this room. Two tables located at back and one table at the front. The said table located in front was table of the preschool coordinators Ms. Norjannah, and the remaining two were for the assistant teacher and a teacher.

Next Instructional Materials to be mentioned were their activity notebooks and books. There activity notebooks can be seen in one area of the room, and this is located at the back. It can be noticed in their two coloured kinds of notebooks for every kid, an orange and the red one. Their activities books were being separated and placed in front, near the table of the teacher coordinator.

The colour chart and letters were everywhere. They were being made creatively by the teacher for the kids to be motivated. The whole room were well ventilated and it was a light paint colour was being used inside the said classroom.

The other IM’s that it could include in this are the table which consist of 16 tables and each table were occupied by two preschoolers. Shoe rock was also available in the said classroom. The school didn’t meet with the standard form of a classroom since they have this one single door for exit and entrance area. The black board was not your typical board for a starter, but a white board.

UTILIZATION OF TEACHING AIDS FORMS

Grade or Year Level of Class Observed: Senior Kindergarten Section Saturn
Date of Observation: February 16, 2014
Subject Matter: Arabic, Number, and Reading
Brief Description of Teaching Approach Used by the Teacher: Directive Approach

Teaching Aids used

(Enumerate in bullet forms)

Strengths

Weaknesses

Comments on Appropriateness of the Teaching Aids used.

  • Teacher

They are well groomed, and they use a more friendly approach when they teach kids.

Teaching would not be effective when they aren’t sensitive.

I guess some teacher should learn how to be friendlier to the kids and be more compassionate to them.

  • Shoe Rock
This can teach the kids how to be more organized. Can be a destructing when it is placed inside the room. I suggest this should be placed outside the school room.
  • Chart
It can be an additional learning for the curiosity of the kids. Lack of organization. Chart should be well organized in a manner that the kids would get their attention.
  • English & Arabic Alphabets
It helps for the familiarization skills of the kids in relation to alphabets Can’t see its weakness. Visibly clear for the kids to see in a far distance.
  • Computer
This helps the kid’s examination to be readable through the use of its font, and can be used in preparing things for the kids. The computer they have should be placed in a safer area. It would be nice if the computer can also use a decoration that could blend in with the atmosphere in class.
  • Table
This gives a proper place for the teacher to work on their needs for their kids. Too much things on top of the table. The teacher is a model. Somehow, he/she has an obligation to clean her table up as a proper way of showing the kids of being an organized adult.
  • Activity Notebooks
This helps the kids to collect their portfolio in a more colourful way. Can’t see any weakness Their IMS in this was good since it helps the kids to recognize their needed activities for that certain issue.
  • Activity Books
Same with the Notebooks. This helps the kids to get the answer in a more clear view. Can’t see any weakness. This book should place together with the notebook in one place.
  • Hygiene Box
It helps to keep the cleanliness of a child. The box should always be monitored for lacking materials. The school gave out a good idea in addressing the individual needs of the kids.
  • Coloured Cups
It caters the other needs of the kids when recess takes over. The cups should be covered. Kids should be protected even in those things they are using. The school gave out an alternative supplies for the kids’ needs.
  • White Blackboard
Easier for the educator to teach the kids using them. It is kind of advance. Not be fitting for the preschoolers. The IM’s for the kids could be great if they use a board with lines.
  • Wall Paper
Gives an attraction for the kids. Too many colours It would be nice if they used a fixed colour.
  • Ventilation
It is well light up. Can’t see any weakness. For the reason that they are much closed door. They need to avail an extra light in case of brownout while the lesson is in session.

My Analysis

What do you think prompted the teacher to choose the material/learning resources that she/he used?

In view of the fact that the teachers were dealing kids, I guess they prompted their self to use a more creative way of making their class room colourful and full of different kinds of learning chart. This is in consideration that kids love brighter things that their eyes can set on. Teachers were also being innovative in thinking other alternatives that could possibly cater the other kids’ needs on hand.

What difficulties, if any, did the teacher experience? How can this be managed?

The assistant once told me a certain difficulties that preschool teachers can encounter and one of this is when the kids started their first day of classes. At first, they were very vulnerable, some of them would run to their parents nor would cry because of some unfamiliar faces that surrounds them. This gives a hard time for the teachers, and they are complied to sort this out through thinking how to get that fear from the kids of going out and go to school. Furthermore, when the kids goes to school some of them don’t have any idea of doing a certain basic action like how to toothbrush their teeth, what to do when they are at the comfort and so many things. This leads for the teacher to nurse them, and teach them the appropriate action that needs to be done on that certain deed.

Over-all, were the learning resources/materials used effectively? Why? Why not?

Yes, I could say they are effective. The way I did observed the kids were very lively at their room. In relation to their portfolios and their needs, they know what to use and where to get it. Based on their Arabic lesson that day, they seem to understand and familiarize will enough about their Arabic lesson. They are very enthusiastically giving out a chorus answer which I could determine it as a sign of learned lesson on their part. They seem to be diligent enough about the things that surround them. In their Math lesson, the kids even has the ability to recognize months, and days during their lecture, and this might be thanks to their IMs of months and days that were being displayed in front of them. I wouldn’t say it isn’t effective since it is far more obvious the way the children lively cooperating with their teachers. The educator themselves really do know how to handle them, and even give some thoughts about giving them an extra tender, loving, care for the kids.

My Reflections

  1. Put yourself in the place of the teacher. What you do similarly and what would you do differently if you would teach the same lesson to the same group of students? Why?

I would probably do the same like teaching them the appropriate manner of doing things, teach them with loud and clear voice, and be friendlier with them. I do also need to stabilize balance instructional materials inside the classroom. Nevertheless, I will probably need to address more activities that would highly need participation from everyone in the classroom.

When I was a student, I was the silent type, but as the time goes on I do realize that guts or self confidence is the most important aspect in one’s career and this thing is something that I want to cultivate from the students to be enhanced. In addition for the preschooler, if there will be a waiting time for them, I would highly recommend telling them stories as to use the time of their waiting into developing their creativity or should we easy imaginary skills at the young age.

The following pictures are the things being set up or used by the preschooler teacher as materials inside their classroom.

Preschooler at rest
Preschooler at rest

Using a white board inside the classroom can be treated as a good way of using it as an instructional material since it is easy, clear and not messy kind thing to use. However, the only defect in this regard is that preschooler are a beginner, I guess it would be appropriate to introduce the basic, a blackboard with line. This would give them the idea about the importance of writing in an appropriate manner through making it up straight which they can reflect it on their pads.

Using imagery in learning as your instructional material is a best way to teach kids because, they like images. This kind of IM would exceed if the instructor put some colours in her output.

Inside the Classroom

This is my first time to enter a preschooler classroom, and I could say it is an impressive one since most of the kids’ needs were already being set up in there.

Wider range for kids!

Impression:

The school is quite capable of providing their students will education materials. The technology they have is equipped of some materials used for the basic learning of the students, the only thing is that they are not easily accessible especially some materials. There are those materials that are not allowed to be borrowed either students or a teacher outside the certain perimeters. Some of those can only be accessible in their library upon request of a teacher as means of educating their students. Internet was not accessible in any facilities of the school.

My Analysis

Were the learning resources/materials arranged properly according to their functions and characteristics?

  • Most of their resources are all inside there library room. In there, those materials are will arranged in accordance with their type. The example of this are their computers for library use, they are in one line, having 8 computers. Magazines and Newspaper are in separate rock standing. The books are will arrange according to their theme or subject. Their projector and television are in one section of the library.

Do the guidelines and procedures facilities easy access to the materials by the teachers? Why? Why not?

  • Yes, the facilities are easily accessible but only to be used inside the library. Examples of this are the projector and the television. They cannot be borrowed outside the library. Teachers are required to ask permission from their heads and the library-in-charge in accessing those materials for education means for their students. There computers inside the laboratory are accessible during the students’ computer lesson.

What are the strengths of this Learning Resource Center?

  • The Assistant Teacher from the Elementary Section told me that they have that certain books that usually not accessible from any schools or any other resources. For this reason some of these books, according to her, were being photocopied by the worker from the DepEd, due to scarcity of that certain materials. From this assumption I am assuming that they have this will equipped educational materials that are provided to them for their students. Aside from this, some of their equipments are safe from any damages that may occur when it used outside the premises of the library.

What are its weakness?

  • The weakness that may appear in this kind of set up is the lack of there access in the internet world. The world is working and moving in a fast pace. Many thing changes happen in one blink of an eye, and making your self updated in the world today through internet is an edge. If you taken this out from the learning system of the students, this can cause of not giving them the rightful access in realizing the reality of the out side world.

What Suggestions can you make?

  • I want to suggest putting up an internet within the campus or it could be only in the library. Learning is not only in books, four corners of the room as well as from the environment, but it is also outside. Internet will help the students to learn. I know that in this kind of learning, there are those websites that are not good for kids. However, in this new age there are those solutions as well; sample of this is making some restriction within the system.

 My Reflections

  1. Which of the materials in the Learning Resource Center caught to your interest most? Why?

o   From the materials that were presented in that said school, probably the projector was something that captured my interest. Though it was not something very extravagant, but as I’ve been in other elementary and high schools, this kind of technology weren’t that always easily accessible in some, but in there, you can really sees the presence of this material. Unlike some other elementary and high school, this kind of material is not always present and easily be applied in class.

  1. Which gadgets/materials are you already confident to use/operate?

o   As for me, since I am used in using computer. I could say I am confident in using this kind of resources since that I’ve been used to it. If I’ll become a teacher in future in times, I would love to use this more often in order to give the student a clear visualization of those topics that I need to emphasize to them.

  1. Which ones do you feel you need to learn more about?

o   The highly thing that I need to learn more about is about restricting the consumption of the internet for the children. Since I would like to encourage internet use for the students in the library, or any other premises of the school, learning how to restricting some website not to be used is needed.

My Portfolio

Paste an article about an example of technology gadget/material that you want to learn more about. How can this gadget/material be useful in instruction/teaching?

Interactive White Board
Interactive White Board

In searching over the internet about these so called gadgets that can be used in teaching profession, I find this interactive whiteboard as an interesting to get ourselves involved with. According from the sources, this is the modern, touch-controlled edition of old chalkboards that works well together with any computer. The board is basically like a huge touch screen, on which teachers or students can write with digital ink and use their bare hands to control the content of the table. It can even be used as huge projector. Having this kind of gadgets in class will make your teaching more effective, and for the students to become more interested in learning.

My Tool

As I observe a class, I will use the Observation Sheet for a more focused observation.

OBSERVATION SHEET Number 1
Principles of Learning Teaching Behaviour of the Teacher/Learning Behaviour of the Learner as Proof of the Application of the Principle of Learning.
  1. Learning is an experience which occurs inside the learner and is activated by the learner.
The teacher discussed all the topics in relation to their lesson, and the quiz that was given. Some students were very participative.
  1. Learning is the discovery of the personal meaning and relevance of ideas.
Teacher answered those test questions verbally in front of the students in order to let the student assist their answers. E.g The Students realized the importance of preparing one’s self before exam.
  1. Learning is a consequence of experience.
Assessing children in their learning and mixing different kinds of strategies is an edge. The teacher gave out a quiz based on their lesson last week, and answers them afterwards by calling some students to verify their answers. Some students were disappointed due to low scores they did receive.
  1. Learning is a cooperative and collaborative process.
The teacher was very enthusiast and alive in giving instructions to the student and even giving out an examination.

The students were drawn from the teacher’s energy and followed her instructions accordingly and even giving out their answers wilful during the question and answer portion.

  1. Learning is an evolutionary process.
The teacher’s action becomes evolutionary since she adopts multiple tasks within the one hour session. She even diligently deals with her grade 5 students with the level of their abilities and skills.
  1. Learning is sometimes a painful process.
Learners were given a certain quiz but it becomes painful for them when they didn’t prepare for it even though the instructor told them about the quiz ahead of time. The students who didn’t do well realize the consequence of not studying before the quiz.
  1. One of the richest resources for the learning is the learner himself.
The teacher let the students’ answers through asking them while assessing each other’s papers.

The students were raising their hands while the teacher was giving out the question in class.

  1. The process of learning is emotional as well as intellectual.
The teacher was starting her class through giving out a friendlier expression. The possible reason is in order to set a friendlier atmosphere while giving out a quiz for the kids, and get the tension out of the students’ shoulders.
  1. The process of problem solving and learning are highly unique and individual.
The teacher was discussing the basic angles and geometric figures by details were somehow highly unique especially in a way the teachers present her teaching. In terms of the student, some were giving their best out to answer their teacher’s question.
OBSERVATION SHEET Number 2
Principles of Learning Teaching Behaviour of the Teacher/Learning Behaviour of the Learner as Proof of the Application of the Principle of Learning.
  1. Learning is an experience which occurs inside the learner and is activated by the learner.
The Teacher let the student answers the chemical equation based on their learning the previously.
  1. Learning is the discovery of the personal meaning and relevance of ideas.
The teacher discussed previously the topic about chemistry formula, and she let the student answer some formula written in the black board. After this she let her student to explain the answer in front of their classmates.
  1. Learning is a consequence of experience.
One learner didn’t answer the assigned equation very well, letting herself to solve it again. A consequence that when you don’t understand the lesson well, one tends to come up with a wrong answer.
  1. Learning is a cooperative and collaborative process.
The learner’s were not participative, but the teacher groups them to answer the chemical formula, letting them to choose one of them to discuss their answer infront.
  1. Learning is an evolutionary process.
Most of the students do have a lot of question about the written formula, but the teacher tried to explain it further.
  1. Learning is sometimes a painful process.
One student was suddenly asked about a certain formula but came up being quite and left the question unanswered.
  1. One of the richest resources for the learning is the learner himself.
Most of the learners do well in answering the equation, giving them more confidence within their self.
  1. The process of learning is emotional as well as intellectual.
The learners’ correct answer makes them happy and build up some confidence within them
  1. The process of problem solving and learning are highly unique and individual.
Answering a complicated equation gave the learner a hard time to come up to the final answer. However, when they arrived correctly to the right answer, feeling of happiness felt.
OBSERVATION SHEET Number 3
Principles of Learning Teaching Behaviour of the Teacher/Learning Behaviour of the Learner as Proof of the Application of the Principle of Learning.
  1. Learning is an experience which occurs inside the learner and is activated by the learner.
The Teacher let the student to answer the mathematical equation, and the learner began to solve the given problem based on their understanding.
  1. Learning is the discovery of the personal meaning and relevance of ideas.
The teacher let her student solve the problem in front of the black board and make them explained the answer they presented.
  1. Learning is a consequence of experience.
Some of the learners were able to answer in front, and upon answering some aren’t well prepared and realized the consequence of being unprepared.
  1. Learning is a cooperative and collaborative process.
The learners were raising their hand, cooperatively wanting to solve the problem on their own.
  1. Learning is an evolutionary process.
The teacher exerts a lot of effort giving more motivation to her student, and does a multi tasking while the lesson was on going.
  1. Learning is sometimes a painful process.
Those learners who didn’t do very well were somehow learned the consequence, and one of this was not to be able to answer the problem in front of her fellow classmates.
  1. One of the richest resources for the learning is the learner himself.
Most of the learners were raising their hand signifying the fact that most of them do well and understand the lesson and some even explained it very well.
  1. The process of learning is emotional as well as intellectual.
As I observed, the teacher were enthusiast, and most willing to give a lesson to them making her student participative and radiate her enthusiast attitude towards her students.
  1. The process of problem solving and learning are highly unique and individual.
The learners’ solve the problem very well and well understood by them. Some learners could even teach to her seat meet that didn’t seem to understand the lesson well.

My Analysis

  1. What is the impact of the Resource Teacher’s observance of these principles on the teaching-learning process and on the learners?
    • To become an efficient educator you need to consider these principles in your way of teaching. It is not easy to be an educator since you cannot just do what you want in teaching children, it’s not. Many things need to be considered. If one teacher wanted to have a strong foundation in her/his own teaching and implant a very great impact to his/her students then this is the answer. One of the teachers that I did indeed observe somehow implements these principles. I could say not all but most of them. This can be signifies how her learners reacts from the way she teach, and the way learner’s enjoy her class. For the learners, skills and abilities are not one day growth; it is a step by step process. The learners don’t really have the idea about these principles, but looking at them, they are indeed very active in cooperating with their teacher. An atmosphere of ease was surrounded in whole class, where teaching can be more fun for the students as well as ease in acquiring the knowledge needed.

RELATED BOOKS ON EDUCATION AND TEACHING

  1. Which learning principle was applied most?
  • As I observed, the most applied principle on that day were “learning is a consequence of experience” and “Learning is a cooperative and collaborative process”. As what I had explained from my previews statement, that most of the student were very active in participating, a very cooperative one. The teacher was also enjoying her class. In the quiz, which was given on that day, some of the student didn’t have a higher score which possibly made them realize that they need to study more.
  1. Which learning principle was applied least or not at all applied?
  • The learning principle that was applied least from all the principles was the number seven, “One of the richest resources for the learning is the learner himself”. In this situation, teacher mostly facilitates with the learning for the students and they, the students, are the one who gives some ideas about a certain topic. In relation to the class that I did observed, this thing were least used. Mostly of the class was being done by the teacher herself.
  1. Do you agree with these principles of learning? Or have you discovered that they are not always correct?
  • Yes, I do agree with these principles. A principle in a certain area of subject is a very important factor that can be used in determining a certain facts. In education, the enumerated principles can be used in studying a certain schools if they are doing what exactly supposed to be an act of teaching kids. The status of how the teachers and learners do can easily be determined. For the further advancement of a certain school, this could be a basis of studying the area of learning should be changed or need some improvements in terms of executing the subject to be tackled in every class.
  1. Lessons I have learned from my observations on the classroom application of the principles of learning.
  • The thing that I’ve learned from my observation is the fact that a teacher should be aware in using these principles in order to be an effective educator.

My Reflections

My reflections on my observations of my Resource Teacher’s observance of these principles. Did my Resource Teachers adhere to these principles?

In the short period of time observing the teachers at AKIC- SLS, I could say that they are adhering these principles well. As seen from their students, they are really well participating and seem to enjoying their class very well. One teacher was very effective in implementing these principles as a whole since you can distinguish how she conducts her class. She can create a well balanced classroom, an environment full of energy, and made the students get motivated in participating inside the class. As an observer and as a person, you can sense in a certain situation about things that seems wrong. From that observation, and sitting in that particular class made me feel of going back from being a student. A feeling of that kind of atmosphere, were you can feel the enjoyment of learning, and being drawn by the teacher’s energy and enthusiasm; that feeling of getting those lessons inside your head without coercing your mind to learn it, that feeling of learning from the mistakes that indeed committed on that day, and thinking of doing good the next time around. This feeling that felt on that day is an experience that these typical principles were being implemented.

The learning’s goal is to give the children what they need, and make them realize things that they could not gain outside the class with guidance of a teacher. The teachers need to present these principles if he/she wanted to make her/his students feel the essence of true learning. Not adhering with these principles will give one’s learner an incomplete learning experience on their part. The development of their thinking skills and the importance of the topic being learned will not be achieved. From the way it looks, this is the importance of these said principles. The teacher that I did observed even gave assessment on her students’ skills which it can be a help in knowing the feedback of her teaching from her students, either it’s effective or not. The learners’ interest should be in the top priority, so as an educator, we need to adopt on everything that is needed in order to fully utilize all the tools that is needed to let them experience the best of learning.

My Portfolio

Principles of Learning in My Own Words.

  1. Learning is teaching kids with the things they aren’t well aware off and making the students interpret of the things they did understand from the lessons.
  2. Learning is knowing something that is beyond ones understanding, and the relationship of this idea to the real life of the students.
  3. Learning is something about learning ones mistake, and the making a correct decision and analysis over something.
  4. Learning is sharing of ideas through teachers, and with highly participation of the students.
  5. Learning should be multi tasking due to changes pace of time.
  6. Learning is not a punishment or discipline that the students should practiced, but the realization of getting your dream with a sacrifice for a successful life.
  7. A student should participate of sharing their ideas/opinion in a class.
  8. Teachers and Learners’ abilities can be measured up through their psychological, sociological, emotional, and intellectual aspects.
  9. Learning should involve high thinking skills in order for each student to be developed in advance regardless of their differences, and considered a certain materials based on their multiple intelligence.

Individual Differences and Learner’s Interaction

This post is based on my field study that I did conduct last three months for the year 2014. You may seem not to approve some of this idea, but please correct me if I am wrong. Most of the things contain here were based on my own opinion. I am very welcome to some ideas that you may share on this subject matter. Thank you and hope it will be a help for those people in search for the same studies.

TASK:

Step 1: Observe a class in different parts of a school day.

Step 2: Describe the characteristics of the learners in terms of age, gender and social and cultural diversity.

Step 3: Describe the interaction that transpires inside and outside the classroom.

Step 4: Interview your resource teacher about the principles and practices that she uses in dealing with diversity in the classroom.

Step 5: Analyze the impact of individual differences on learners’ interaction.

OBSERVATIO GUIDE:

Find out the number of students. Gather data as to their ages, gender, and racial groups, religious and ethnic backgrounds.

During class:

  1. How much interaction is there in the classroom? Describe how the students interact with one another and with the teacher. Are there groups that interact more with the teacher than others?
  2. Observe the learners seated at the back and the front part of the room. Do they behave and interact differently?
  3. Describe the relationship among the learners. Do the learners cooperate with or compete against each other?
  4. Which students participate actively? Which students ask for most help?
  5. When a student is called and cannot answer the teacher’s question, do the classmates try to help him? Or do they raise their hands so that the teacher will call them instead?

Outside class:

  1. How do the students group themselves outside the class? Homogeneously, by age? By gender? By racial or ethnic groups? Or are the students in mixed social groupings? If so, describe the groupings.
  2. Describe how the learners interact with each other? What do they talk about?

OBSERVATION REPORT

Students on BIO-Chem
Students on BIO-Chem

In this episode, I’ll be picking the section Pearl of the third year as my subject of interest. When we got there, it was their subject teacher in Bio-Chemistry who was there conducting a discussion on a certain formula about chemistry related topic. Everyone inside the class room were concentrating about this subject matter. Maybe this is because, the teacher made a groups out of this class and they were given the task to solve a certain chemistry formula. Upon solving the problem, students were required to discuss the given problems by a representative from their group. On this idea, nobody goes against this will of the teacher, and they were given 5 minutes to solve, and to think about the answer. This made the students all in focused in discussing and solving the certain problems applying how they understand the topic mentioned to them. Their interaction seems not to be like that of what I expect. I was expecting they were going to formulate a circle by group and discuss among them about the answer. Their interaction in solving the problem was lesser, since most of them were quite solving the answer each of their own. I am assuming in this kind of situation that the group already designated one of their group mates to answer, and explain the assigned task. When the time ups, each group prepared their selves and adrenaline rush comes. As they answer the question in front of them, they seem to be quite shy, but got the guts to discuss it within the class. As the teacher were backing up their answer and asking them a few question on this regard, the reporter seems to give a less answer in one question without expanding their answer as to be more detailed. While one of them was explaining, some students were very talkative, other talk about the lesson and the students at the back were discussing other matters, which their teacher noticed after a minute. Their teacher interaction were very formal inside the class, some students were freely expressing their feelings and easily conveyed their ideas and thoughts to their teacher confidently.

In terms of the students’ arrangement, they were composed of 9 columns; each three column as divided were composed of three rows of students. In this case, two girls talk from each other and the male student beside them were in silent mode. This might be because of his two girls seated near him. Observing as well the last student at the back, they were very talkative during the chemistry class. They were talking about the latest trend of the Korean Novela, and any kinds of topic in relation to K-POP. Meanwhile those students who were seated in the front were very quite concentrating on the subject on hand.

Despite of them, being in one section, they have the tendency to feel the tension of competing from each other. Since section pearl were in the first section, every student were complied to do everything at their best. The feelings of tension within them were very obvious. In terms of their cooperation, they have less cooperation from each other on that certain topic that shows how they work as one team. In terms of answering a certain formula, not most of them were trying to help their school mate. Maybe this happens, because they are not confident enough to speak and talk about their answer in front of their classmates, which coerce the teacher to call for a student to answer that unanswered formula.

Outside of their class, the students interact only with their age group. There were only few who do the interaction with their junior or senior classmates since most of the time; they were having an interaction mostly within their aged group or the student within their section. When they do their interaction during their break time, they usually talked about the same interest. These could be the latest trend on television, the latest KPOP star, their crushes, telling some secrets and many others.

SUMMARY OF OBSERVATION

  • Identify the person who plays key roles in the relationship and interactions in the classrooms? What roles do they play? Is there somebody who appears to be the leader, a mascot/joker, an attention seeker, a little teacher, a doubter/pessimist?
  • I didn’t get most of the students’ name inside the Pearl Section, but as far as I remember, these mentioned roles were present within the circle of the class. Those students who were included in those programs that AKIC are involved were the student who seems to have this kind of Leader Charisma. Having a confidence, very expressively toward their teacher, open minded, knows how to deal with the thing they are in and very flexible. A little teacher, section pearl do have one. I did encounter one male student, while I was interviewing them, one of the male student came to me and discussed to me some information that I am needing in my field study that give me an idea how confident he was. A mascot do exist in them as well, there was that one student when we set at the back of the class, and as I observe, she keeps on talking, and cracking up some jokes within their classmates not even caring if they have a teacher on standby.
  • Are students coming from minority group accepted or rejected by others? How is this shown?
  • So far, this kind of situation doesn’t exist within the students. As I perceive it, they treated each classmate equally, because most of them were meranao, who lives in one place
  • How does the teacher influence the class interaction considering the individual differences of the students?
  • As per observation, the teacher treats all the students in an equal range. However, it could not be avoided that one of the students were really slow in understanding a certain topic, which give the teacher a certain point that he/she could understand it the second time around through making a classmate help him/her in answering the question and later on back the answer up. When a teacher wanted to keep her students to be alive, one of them has a technique and this is to point them out the very common in them, and this is in relation to crushes which teenage life were usually curious. A “kilig” factor is something that a teacher could find as a subject of wakening some students who seems to be sleeping inside the class.
  • What factors influence the grouping of learners outside the classroom?
  • The influence that could possibly made the grouping of learners outside the classroom is the so called commonalities of interest or perhaps some group are within the range level of the other classmate that they synch very well to one another. Based on my experience during my high school days, I usually go with the people who have the same range of thinking. Not totally the same but somehow, we could find our feelings at ease with one another. Also, once I saw that person I could entrust myself with, I would surely make friends with them. In relation to this, I assume that this is also same goes with those students in AKIC-SLS since most of the adult undergone with this type of feeling during our development stage to maturity.
