Nature of Leadership

Hi Guys! Can you imagine a company without any leader? In this video we are going to learn about leadership based from the book of John W. Newstrom/Keith Davis entitled Organizational Behavior. We are going to explore how does behavior, role, and skills form the leadership styles of a person. This topic will be composed by episodes. For this first episode, we are going to talked about more on leadership first.

WHAT’S THE CURRICULUM MADE OF?

This post is based on my field study that I did conduct last three months for the year 2014. You may seem not to approve some of this idea, but please correct me if I am wrong. Most of the things contain here were based on my own opinion. I am very welcome to some ideas that you may share on this subject matter. My Map

For this concept, go through the following steps.

  1. Interview a school administrator / faculty about how they concertize their school’s vision and goals into the curriculum.
  2. Visit a school and find out how they attain the aims of elementary, secondary and tertiary education.
  3. Interview one or two students and ask them their school’s vision / mission.
  4. Record the different methods. Strategies that they employed to attain their school’s objectives

My Tools

For this Episode, visit a school / university or get a copy of the school brochure. Copy the school / university’s vision, mission and goals on this page.

VISION

A Globally Competitive Institution of Higher Learning. Distinguished by its commitment to the total development of man through quality education. Islamic values and Advance learning concepts, methods and systems.

MISSION

The RC-AL Khwarizmi International College shall provide high quality of advance, professional and technical education to Muslims and other youths in the Philippines thereby serving as a catalyst of Development of the Muslim Communities especially in the ARMM through instruction research and extension services.

My Analysis

  1. How important is the school’s vision, mission, and goals in designing the curriculum?
  • In human life, a goal/plan should be created in order to have his/her guide on how her/his life supposed to be or how s/he wants it to be. A curriculum should be in the same status. An objective is needed in order to direct the change in behaviour of the students which is the aim of learning, to change a person to a better citizen. A curriculum should entail this, and in order to create a path for a certain objective, they need to create a vision that redirects the institutions would be like to be in the future. A mission that aims the student on what they will become after being educated, and a goal that tends to set the intents of those things to be accomplished.
  1. What methods and strategies were employed by the school community to realize these goals?
  • As per observed at their institution, they are providing all the necessities that the students needs, for them to learn in an ease environment. Other than this, they mostly employed teachers who are highly qualified and well motivated to teach the learner what they supposed to know. The administrators were also doing as much as they could to communicate some educators outside the Philippine in order to send the highly qualified students to the United States of America to learn more. In terms of their students, they seem to be vibrant kids, full of enthusiast. Confidence can be sense from them and inside the class; they wear a brimming energy of interest in learning.
  1. How did the students manifest that they have internalized their vision, mission and goals?
  • As seen in the third year pearl, students were giving out a well mannered attitude as model students. You can sense how well they put/pose their self in a more professional way even they were just a third year student. The principal, Ms. Imelda Mamangconi was always praise this set of group for being doing well in their academic status, and it can also be seen in the observation we did see on that day. Due to excellence that they are projecting, some of them were given the opportunity to be sent in the USA to learn further.

My Reflections/My Insights

Curriculum is a life blood of education as I perceive as I’ve learned gradually in Educ 15s. The important aspect in learning. Upon creating this so called curriculum. Administrator of a certain school should implement their mission, vision and objective as bases in making/creating good curriculum. The administrators have this responsibility in developing such matter because they are dealing with the interest of their learner, which could affect their whole future.

The school that we did observe were very accommodating, and even gave us permission to roam around their premises. In AKIC-SLS, we roam around in order to observe how they put this VISION, MISSION and GOALS inside the campus, however it was kind of frustrating since it wasn’t displayed anywhere the outskirt of the school except inside the learners’ classroom. So far we indeed observe three sections from elementary and secondary level. Two of the room namely Grade VI and 3rd year level display’s the VISION and MISSION inside the room as a part of their decoration inside the room. However, the display of VISION and MISSION are highly advice to place these aspects about the school inside the premises of the campus in order to be transparent to its reader especially for those parents. Furthermore, the school should as well put the GOAL/OBJECTIVE inside the campus and in the classroom. This school failed to implement this important aspect in promoting the school, as well as instilling to the young minds of their children for guidance throughout their school life.

Look Deeper into the Concepts, Nature and Purposes of the Curriculum

My Enriching Activities

If you are to design a curriculum for your own school, what are the things you need to consider? Accomplish the graphic organizer below.

My Analysis

  1. Why do we need to consider the traditional and progressive points of view of curriculum?
  • As a part in learning, we need to consider tradition and progressive point of view of curriculum since it is being used mostly inside the school. If we are going to observe a certain class identifying what can kind of teaching a teacher’s act, we can easily determined what kind of curriculum he/she is using. Through this, we can easily understand the meaning of this two, and upon applying this, we can easily tell which is more effective in student’s learning.
  1. How do the different educational philosophies relate to the curriculum in the schools you visited? Cite examples /situations?
  • The educational philosophy is a very important in the curriculum in the schools because it gives guide for the curriculum of the school to follow. Without a philosophy seems to be like an empty shell. These philosophies become the “window” to the world and “compass” in life. These can be determined as the blue print of a certain teacher or in the curriculum as a whole in the school.
  1. Why is there a need to revise the curriculum from time to time?

  • There is a need to revise the curriculum from time to time because society’s values and needs change over time. In the fast movement of the world today, every interest of every child is shifting or evolving as the times moves. The need of our society is becoming more demanding more than the previous years. Let site an example, during the 1950s, there was lot more emphasis on the home economics and industrial arts type of things, more emphasis on simply memorizing facts and rules. Nowadays, with technology shifts, and an economy that is base on different skills, if we had the same curriculum, it would be a catastrophe. Curricula have changed to meet the different needs that we have now.

My Reflections /My Insights

After interviewing a faculty of a school, and searched about these two kinds of curriculum, I could say that both of this two are very different when it is applied. Mostly, in our changing world today, students are becoming more innovative. They want to participate, give their opinion on a certain subject, try different experiences, and do a lot more. A mere traditional curriculum will not simply give them the edge of doing what they expect to fulfil while they are in school.

There is that certain school that students were somehow complaining due to this traditional curriculum. They’ve mentioned that this academic curriculum was dreary as well as remote. According also to them, they were exposed to a situation of listening to recitations only. Lead discussions were a nightmare. Simply it is kind a boring type of learning for them.

However, on the progressive curriculum, it is a type of curriculum accompanied a practical type of education that was even more pleasant as well as interesting in the students. A type of curriculum that was in a position to offer education that was centred to the interest of the child. They find this more interesting since they could voice out what they intended to share. Being facilitated by the teachers, the students can do the task in accordance with their own likings. They can learn more through application. From this testimony, we can assume that many of students now are truly evolving, and administrative schools either public or private need to cope up with these changes.

TASK:

Step 1: Observe two or more learner’s of different abilities but with the same grade or year level.

Step 2: Find our something information about their background.

Step 3: Observe them as they participate in a classroom.

Step 4: Write a narrative report and a brief reflection on your experience.

OBSERVATION GUIDE:

  1. Observe the class to see the differences in abilities of the learners?
  2. Try to identify the students who seem to be performing well and those that seem to be behind.
  3. Validate your observations by asking the teacher about the background (family, socio-economic, presence of some learning disability) of the students.
  4. Observe the behaviour of both high achieving and low achieving learners. Note their dispositions, pace in accomplishing tasks, interaction with teacher, and interaction with others.
  5. Observe the teacher’s method in addressing the individual learning needs of the students in his/her class.

OBSERVATION REPORT

From our observations during the past three months at AKIC SLS, I will be choosing the Grade IV Section Molybdenum for this observation, where we conducted our Field Study last January 26, 2014 in the afternoon. The Grade VI pupils were very will behave when we entered the class. Their subject teacher for that day was Ms. Norhanifah Alikhan, who was discussing about their lesson in relations to the different agencies in the Philippines. On that duration of the discussion, most of the students were quite, and cooperating well enough to the teacher. However, there were those students who were writing assignments, others doing something and some were listening. When the teacher was asking them about a certain question, most of them would likely to answer her in chorus. There you will also observe those students who really raising their hands excitedly in answering the some question. As a whole in the class, I could say there were only few students who really were excel from the way I observed from their oral recitation which involves giving the full name of a certain department of the Philippines. I could say more or less three students who really gotten the correct answers when she gave a certain department on those three students. Some were having a hard time recalling a certain letters while they were having this oral recitation. As to validate my observations from the teacher, I couldn’t ask this certain issue for the reasons that the teacher can’t be interrupted while in the class, and lack of time for an interview. But I did observed a certain students, whose name is Bai Khadija Salivia U. Macarambon and Queen Ashaniah M. Pangandaman, who were sitting at back. One of them were far cited and having a hard time coping up from her classmates, yet due to her seat mate, she was being assisted by her through understanding their lessons especially the math problem that was given that afternoon.

When Mam Rashida R. Rashid take over the class for her math session, there I saw enough how the students do interact in answering the math solutions. Mam Rashida was reviewing the class in preparation for this examination, at the end of her discussion, she then give some solution for the students to answer. There are those students, who were called upon to solve the problem in front of the class, some did well in answering this portion and some don’t. Those students who have a high achiever status were facing this assessment well enough by answering the problem in an easy and fastest manner. Those student students that don’t do well enough, they seem to be left hanging, just stand there and think. In the sense that it was a session where teacher and students interact, most of the students were very attentive and some were cooperating in answering the given question through raising their hands. The teacher were not being one sided, when a certain students didn’t answer the problem, she gives encouragement to that certain students which is very effective in increasing their level of confidence in answering the problems. The teacher was very lively, and feels the motivation coming through her. On that mentioned activities, she always let the students answer the problem in front in order to build a far more confidence in expressing and explaining their self in front.

SUMMARY OBSERVATION

Did your observation match the information given by the teacher? Were you able to correctly identify who among the students performed well and who did not? What behaviour helped you identify them? (Volunteering to answer, responding to teacher’s directions, etc.

  • Yes, I’m very thankful that both teachers’ activities gave me the chance to identify those students who were doing well in the class, and those who do not. Through the volunteering the answer, I did saw those students who were very confidently giving out their answers, and those students who seems to be at middle zone, were I could see myself through them. We could not only base from a quiz and a test in evaluating the students, but the given situation is a good sample where one can base upon in a more clear view. We can’t only base our assessment through only this since we are talking about the performance of the students. There are those learner’s who were still shy in expressing their self’s and through the teacher’s directions and how he/she handle the class for evaluation could put up those students who are shy, and express theirselfs in another way around. There are those learner’s who excel and express their self in other way around than those students who can easily express their ideas.

Describe the differences in ability levels of the students in the class? Is there a wide gap between the students who are performing well and those that are not?

  • Looking at their differences between the learners who were performing well and those who were not was not very far. In those students who were performing well do have confidence in them to express their ideas without thinking what their classmates might think, but those learners who were not performing well were somehow shy in expressing their ideas. I would probably guess, they were lacking a self confidence, and a practice to be more expressive. They need a motivation in order to push their selves in doing something.

Describe the methods used by the teacher in handling the students’ differences in abilities. How did the students respond to the teacher?

  • The method that the teacher used was deductive method, were her teaching started in the rule or principle, and then examples are given to explain the rule or principle. Since Ma’am Rashida is a math teacher, she is expected to use this cause in math…you have to hand down the principle before the learner could get anything in order to solve a certain problem. Along with this is that she is using the convergent questions which require a single responses and that there is only one correct or best responses. Several of the learners were cooperating to their teacher very well, and responded in the way Ma’am Rashida conducted her class. As for those students, who aren’t doing well was given by the teacher some motivations in order to do better in the next time around.

PERSONAL REFLECTIONS

  1. Recall the time when you were in the elementary, high school or college. Call to mind the high and low achievers in your class. How did your teacher deal with differences in the abilities? Was your teacher effective?
  • Three years in my high school years, I have been in the first section. I don’t know how it was but I am indeed in that section even though I am the most quite among all of my classmates back then. Each of us has a unique personality, but in terms of those classmates who excel in advance was something I could point who where those people. Those low achievers, which I could categorize myself, do our thing in a way we could do our best. For example me, I usually do the best as I can in order not to get a zero point in any subject matter. It became my motivation not to get a zero score, as not to get embarrassed from them. Our teachers really do their best in order to apply to us the best method she/he could give. They don’t give us not too hard and not too easy subject matter. Some of our teachers were effective in a way that I could be happier in applying those thought they instil to us back then, because what I’ve become now was a part and parcel of their teaching from those years.
  1. With the principle of individual differences in mind, what methods and strategies will you remember in the future to ensure that you will be able to meet the needs of both the high and low achievers in your class.
  • The learners are the high priority of the teacher and their interest counts. If I’ll be a teacher someday, I will probably consider making a curriculum or a lesson plan that identifies the students’ interest in order for them to be knowledgeable about the subject matter. This also includes their strengths and needs when constructing a lesson plan. If everybody couldn’t totally get what was being taught to them, thinking of alternatives ways is a best thing in order to get their interest.

In a learning environment, making it modified and through attaching personalized environment in a more welcoming aura, personalized and comfortable for the student is very important in order to increase their motivation as a students. IN addition to this, one student can be much comfortable with her/his environment when she/he is together with her/his family, so in order to build that kind of feeling in them, it would be much better making learning as a family affair, by encouraging the participation of students’ families.

Classroom Management and Learning

Students on play time!
Students on play time!

This post is based on my field study that I did conduct last three months for the year 2014. You may seem not to  approve some of this idea, but please correct me if I am wrong. Most of the things contain here were based on my own opinion. I am very welcome to some ideas that you may share on this subject matter. Thank you and hope it will be a help for those people in search for the same studies.

TASK:

Step 1: Observe a class.

Step 2: Using a checklist, find out the evident classroom components.

Step3: Describe how the classroom is structured/designed to follow everyone to participate in the learning activities.

Step 4: Relate the data in your checklist to the learner’s behaviour.

Step 5: Reflect on how classroom management affects learning

OBSERVATION GUIDE:

  1. Are there areas in the classroom for specific purposes?
  2. Are there rules and procedures followed?
  3. What are the daily routines done by the teacher? (Prayer, attendance, monitoring of assignment, warm up activities, etc.) how are they done?
  4. Is there a seating arrangement? What is the basis of this arrangement?
  5. Observe the noise level in the classroom. How is this managed?
  6. If a learner is not following instructions or is off-task, what does the teacher do? (behaviour strategies)
  7. What does the teacher do to reinforce positive behaviours? (behaviour strategies)

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT MATRIX

ASPECT OF CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT DESCRIPTION EFFECT ON THE LEARNERS
SPECIFIC AREAS IN THE CLASSROOM In there were a set of arm chairs a table, and a bulletin board and other charts that where located on the wall. It is mainly for learning environment. The classroom was fitting to a learning situation but the effect was for only inside learning. They only have limited area inside that could widen their interest.
CLASSROOM RULES Class room rules were very specific located at the left side of the classroom. This will keep the learners be reminded of possible importance aspect in life.
CLASSROOM PROCEDURES There were no procedures written anywhere the classroom. Since no procedures were written, students were left hanging and left with no instruction inside the classroom to follow.
DAILY ROUTINE Prayers were being done inside the classroom before they begin their classes. A good motivation for the learners is to pray and engrave in them the importance of spiritual aspect.
SEATING ARRANGEMENT Teacher arranges them accordingly. There were three rows, every row consisting of three arm chairs; left and the right side were for girls and middle was boy. This instil and force the kids to keep their silence, because girls were separated as to stop them from being talkative and boys were put in the middle as to behave them self during classes.
HANDLING MISBEHAVIOR/OFF TASK BEHAVIOR Teacher calls out directly those students who are noisy. These will help the other students to be focused and realize the consequence of being noisy during the lessons.
REINFORCEMENT OF POSITIVE BEHAVIOR The teacher give positive feedback by saying “That’s good Ms. ____, but whose gonna help her/him”…by this, teacher appreciate a student for doing an effort. This will build a self confidence on the students’ part and making them learn to be appreciative even in a little thing.

SUMMARY OF OBSERVATION:

How did the classroom organization and routines affect the learners’ behaviour?

In our class Educ 15s, our mentor suddenly spoke these words in front of us that “a lesson needs to be repeatedly lectured for them to be reminded and as to master it.” I believe that this is the reason of daily routines to be integrated inside the life of the students. Our memories as human being were very short, we are very prone of this aspect and in order for us to apply things, we need to make our body and mind master it. In terms of this so called classroom organization, this was being set up for the students to learn how to organize a small group as for them to be ready in the bigger application that they could apply it in organizing a certain group when time comes.

What should the teacher have in mind when she/he designs the classroom organization and routines? What theories and principles should you have in mind?

A teacher should think the befitting classroom organizations and routines that could also be fitting with the likings of her/his students in general. S/he needs to include students mostly in deciding this issue for them to learn how they could organize themselves and the routines, but of course with assistance from a teacher. In order to coincide this with the students I did observe, I once asked a student how did they designed their classroom, and she in did mentioned that they did the most of the activities and the design in the classroom and with the consent from the teacher.

Which behaviour strategies were effective in managing the behaviour of the learners? In motivating students? Why were they effective?

Attitude of a teacher means a lot in managing the behaviour of her/his students. As I observe from one of the teacher in AKIC-SLS last February 3, 2014. She has this typical expression which seems to be strict, and talk to her students with confidence, but this act doesn’t seems to be effective for the learners since they keep on talking, despite of the emotion she did show to them. The possible reason that I could come up with this is that, this teacher taught her students without concerning the so called passion within her and don’t have a happy disposition. She seems to be not caring so much with her students. Nevertheless, those teachers whom you could sense their passion and having a happy disposition from the way they taught their children seem to be a far more effective. Students listen very well and motivated with an ease atmosphere around that certain teacher. We human somehow sense the other mood that we can easily vibrate in them.

PERSONAL REFLECTIONS

  1. Imagine yourself organizing your classroom. In what grade / year level do you have yourself? What routines and procedures would you consider for this level? Why?

Imagining me in a classroom set up, I would highly recommend myself to teach a first year high school. Why? For the reason that I would like to handle those kids who will be in their first year of high school. Their fresh mind and their higher level of curiosity is something I want to fill in. First year level is something important in a high school part because this is the first thing for a student to occur and their motivation to know new something is in their first year. In relation to their routines, I would like to implement a prayer before our classes begin. Next here, I would like to start my discussion and alive greetings for the students, and expected to have a feed back in them as well. Thirdly, I would probably ask a certain student to recap on our lesson the previews meeting, and then proceed to my lessons. I would end my lesson through my students giving of a quote that will help them motivate their self and the other, and end with a prayer.

  1. Make a list of the rules you are likely to implement in this level. Why would you choose these rules?

The following rules were something I would like to implement.

I would like to implement that they should wear their proper uniform and ID when they are in the school premises.

Observe silence when the class is ongoing, because they will be given an ample of time when their return comes like reporting, oral recitation, or making them answer.

Excuses should be made when they are going outside the classroom.

They should apply and be courteous among their classmates.

Before and after the class, they need to arrange their things and table.

Greet their teachers and those visitors politely when they are at present.

I would like to have a higher participation coming from the students.

Cell phone must be in silent mode. Being caught using their cell phone during class will be punished.

  1. Should learners be involved in making the class rules? Why?

In this today’s generation, kids are not just mere students in a classroom but also a decision maker. We are also now in progressive mode of curriculum, and most of the activities were facilitated by the teacher and the students are highly advisable to do most of a certain activities. The making of the class rules should include the students in making those rules in classroom, as to practice their rights in getting their opinion and ideas and that these makings of rules were part of it.
