THE TEACHER’S PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION (FS6E2)

my-teaching-philosophy1

My Concrete Experience

This activity will enable you to ask yourself about the different future practices or actions that you will do in teaching. You may not have done it yet, but if you become a teacher what do would be your response to each item? Your answers will identify what your philosophy of education is all about.

Answer each item in the Survey Questionnaire very honestly. There is no right nor wrong answer for each item. After you have answered each item, record your answers and look at the interpretation at the back of this work text.

After you have answered the questionnaire yourself, you are to ask two teachers to do the same activity.

WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY F EDUCATION

(based on Sadker & Sadker, 1998 Teachers, Schools and Society, 2nd ED)

Each of us has a philosophy of education or a set of fundamental beliefs regarding how we think schools should run. What is your philosophy of education? To find out, read each of the following statements about the nature of education. Decide whether you agree or disagree with each statement. Use the following numbers to express your response:

4 Agree Strongly                               2 Disagree

3 Agree                                                1 Disagree strongly

Note

Photocopy two copies of this instrument. Request two teachers to answer the remaining questionnaire. Tabulate all the answers in the Matrix provided.

Now that you have responded to all 40 times, write the number of the response to each statement in the matrix below. Add the numbers in each column to determine your attitude and those of the two teachers toward key educational philosophies.

FS6E22

Among the three of you, who is more inclined to be an essentialist, perennialist, progressivist, essentialist or behaviourist?

  • I and the teacher number 1 are the one who are inclined to be more essentialists.
  • Teacher number 2 is the one who is incline to be more perennialists.
  • Teacher number 1 is the one who got the total of 30 is incline to be more progressivist.
  • I got a point of 24 which indicated that I am inclining to be an essentialist.
  • Teacher number 1 got the highest with 25 as the total score which indicates that she is inclined to be a behaviourist teacher.

My Observations

Visit a teacher in a school and observe what school/classroom activities reflect his/her philosophy of education while she is teaching. Identify and describe teacher’s action or behaviour and match each with the identified educational philosophy.

  1. Observed actions of a teacher who is a progressivist:
  • The teacher that I could possibly site as an example in this philosophy was Ms. Rash. She is a Math teacher that applies more on examples that the students complied to answer in regards with their understanding on the subject matter. Her tactics is, after discussing the lesson, she would then write some problems at the board and later on the discussion she would call a student to answer the problem and make them explain it in front of their classmates. She is somehow trying to in calculate a critical thinking of ability in them.
  1. Observed actions of a teacher who is a behaviourist:
  • I could not totally make a 100% assumption, but the way I view it, the principal at AKIC-SLS was an example of a teacher that hold out this kind of philosophy of teaching in her. During our days of observation, I did notice that Ma’am would always state a certain students who excel in the whole high school department and uplifts their particular achievements, as well as their capabilities in us. She was very proud making some of her students to experience a change of environment through sending some of them in the United States of America as exchange students.

My Reflections

Based on your concrete experience and the actions of the teacher you have observed, how important is your philosophy of education to your future career as a teacher? How would your experiences and observations contribute to your becoming a teacher?

  • In order to become a teacher with a vocation and mission to change something within the society. I could say, I need to do a lot of things in order to reach the part where I can confidently provide my students of those things they needed, and through experience I could possibly relate more, see more in them the kind of philosophy that could be more applicable in a certain set of students that would fit.
  • Philosophy is very important as a guide in providing a student’s a quality of learning. Teachers needed to consider the individual differences of her/his students and used the best method for them to learn, choosing a certain philosophy might direct them and motivate them to learn more on the subject matter that you would choose for them. The teachers’ priority is the teaching method and strategies that befitting for her/his students, because we are preparing them to face the reality of the world.

My Affirmed Concepts

Identify at least three concepts learned in your previous subject like “The Teaching Profession which are related to the Experiential Learning Episode 3 (Teaching Belief/Philosophy) that are confirmed or affirmed in this activity? Enumerate.

  1. Affirmed Concept 1

That the teachers are following a certain philosophies which I believed before that teaching was something you teach kids without any of these, and now it was affirmed to me that using philosophy in teaching is a requirements to be a good teacher.

  1. Affirmed Concept2

It was affirmed to me that that the school we are observing, the teacher specifically was using a certain philosophy. One person that I affirmed who uses a progressivist was Ms. Rashidah R. Rashid, who is a Math Teacher and a graduate of education, who could totally understand what are the type of philosophy she’s going to use in applying her teaching. Since she is math teacher, she was using that mentioned philosophy in her kids since it is implying the attitude of living NOW. Her teaching is by living at the PRESENT!

  1. Affirmed Concept 3

In the surveyed questionnaire that was given to a two teachers and for me to answers, it was affirmed that everyone is entitled with their own opinion of a certain subject matter. After collecting the data, these three persons results a different sum total, which shows what kind of philosophy they are inclined to be. From different point of views in this subject matter, it can easily be seen that each of us can bring different philosophy to the students, that could possibly a causes of our own believe and idea on a certain situation. This makes every individual to be more unique.

My Future Application

Using the first hand experiences in this activity, how will I use these when I become a teacher in the future?

  1. In teaching learning teacher needs to consider mostly what their students do need in relation to their subject matters. The application of your teaching and how you present them to a set of learners affect their interest. You have to be keener on how you will deliver as their learning is the priorities among others in education.
  1. In addressing diversity learners a teacher need to adopt and choose the kind of philosophy that is more applicable in a certain group of learners.
  1. In creating a conducive learning environment you have to look on the environment of the students. If a teacher realizes that the kinds of environment is not suitable for her learners and the methods she is using, then its time for her/him to look on the alternatives to make some changes. In regards to teaching, the teacher needs to look carefully on the “how to teach” of a certain philosophy in order to integrate it with the current environment they have.

Licensure Examination Experience

There were articles I had written the last few months ago about the story how I ended myself in pursuing education as one of my interest. Now, I’ve experienced so many things along with it, and some of these were already in scripted in some pages of this website. So, here I am, going to tell my experience on how I go through a long series of process in order to reach the point where I need to attend the LET examination and ended up taking them.

I’ve started my review last 2014 of April, along with my friends at St. Louis Review Center. I thought of reviewing at that said center for me to recall everything that I did learned when I was in my elementary and secondary age. Being in the confinement of the office for almost 5 years, it take my basic knowledge away from this memory of mine. Replenishing those information is needed, especially now that aging process is lurking along the way. The memory itself is starting to deteriorate if it is not well trained, and reviewing is the best option to suppress the unexpected events when someone is planning to take the LET Examination. This is why I took the risk in segregating my time for this task. It take my Saturday and Sunday time to go there and review. I was pleased by the schedule because we were mixed together with those freshly graduate of some universities/colleges within Iligan City. In those time, I was hoping not to be mixed up together with the meranao students, because as far as everyone’s know, nobody know about my plan. I guess, I am one of those typical person who undergone with a secondary courses and now kind of hesitating to tell everyone else, unless they did pass the examination mentioned. For almost 4 months, I’ve been busy with my work and my schedule for review. The time was ticking so swiftly that I almost forgot my other worries. God has been so kind to us since the examination were being moved from July 27, 2014 to August 17, 2014. There might be a reason for this event to happen besides the reason from the Catholic side why the exam ended up in a cancellation. This gave us plenty of time to prepare more in the exam. Along those days, I did realized that I didn’t made a mistake in reviewing at the said center, because it did gave me time to read, relearn and experience about this situation.

Before the exam, we did had a hard time getting our grades to be completed because one of our teacher didn’t gave our grade on time. For this reason we’ve waited days before she did gave us, and the filing of the examination were more or less 6 days before its deadline. Upon receiving the information of the completed grades, I didn’t hesitate to be absent on the first day of working days to settle things ahead. I did go to Saint Michael College in order for me to complete everything to get my Transcript of Records. I went to the Dean requesting my TOR, and gave me some instruction to complete. In addition with the prescribed requirements, one of this was paying our balance at the review center as to get certificate coming from SLRC. Upon knowing, it revealed to us that SMC and SLRC were somehow connected with each other. Having no choice, we ended up paying 4,000. That afternoon of Monday, we submitted the certificate from SLRC, together with the signed permit at the registrar. Giving them those papers, we were informed that they will be giving us a message after our TOR has been made. After three or four hours, we were pleased upon telling us that it was already had been finished.

Three days after its completion my friends and I have decided to go at the PRC office to file our papers for the Licensure Examination. We did bring the following requirements:

  1. Original and photocopies of Transcript of Records with Special Order and Date of Graduation, with scanned pictures and with remarks “FOR BOARD EXAMINATION PURPOSE ONLY”. Graduates of government schools and institutions/programs accredited by recognized accredited agencies under the FAAP are exempted from SO. Graduates of New Schools/Degree Programs must submit School Recognition and/or Permit to operate.
  2. Original and photocopy of NSO-issued Birth Certificate (if NSO copy is not clear, bring copy from the Local Civil Registrar)
  3. For married females, original and photocopies of NSO-issued Marriage Contract (if NSO copy is not clear, bring copy from Local Civil Registrar)
  4. Two (2) passport size colored with white background and complete name tag.
  5. Current Community Tax Certificate (Cedula)
  6. Other specific requirements are required by the Commission or the Professional Regulatory Board.

We did get there early at around 6 in the morning and hoping to be the first in line. However, arriving there after 2 hours of travelling, there were so many people in lined. I ended up getting 2k plus as a number. We’ve waited outside for one hour to be called. At that day many people were at PRC, some of them were renewing their license and many of the people were filing for the LET EXAM, just like us. We did get through with another line, as we get nearer to the front desk who would check our papers, we assured that our requirements were not lacking. As I was being entertained that moment, I was praying that everything about my documents were all complete. It didn’t take us much time for that clearing and all three of us were finished after paying a full amount of 900. The cashier told us that the NOA and the receipts will be given to us a week before the examination. We left a relief, and relaxed from the travel and the stress from filing our documents with a nice window shopping at Limketkai Shopping Center.

More than 30 days before the examination, all of us were tensed for the exam. We continued our review during Saturday and Sunday. Whereas the days were fast ticking, I thought of having a self-review after office. Someone did advised me to review because it’s not a 100 percent that everything in the review will come up. Days after days after days, I continued the self-review. I know that I didn’t totally focus, but I do know that I did review as much as my interest arises. I believe that forcing yourself too much will do no good. There were so many things playing along inside my mind along the way. I did tried to counter those negative thoughts that encircling my mind, by thinking of doing the best as I can to motivate myself. I did set up from these brain of mine that I need to pass the exam as to not waste my time from studying for 6 months plus 3 or 4 months of review. I already used up my time and energy doing this things along the way. As the days passed, there encountered changes happen, and one of this were my office schedule. I was assigned at Marawi Service Desk by my own agency, and then later on had an office scheduled of Sunday to Thursday, which caused me to decide to move my review from Saturday-Sunday to Friday-Saturday, as I’ve asked permission to Sir Ken about my plan, he told me that it’s too late for me to do this since the exam was getting nearer. For this reason, I don’t have the choice but to review only on Saturday, and excuse myself during Sunday.

Calendar

Seventeen days before the examination, I’ve decided to go to Cagayan de Oro to get my NOA together with my friends NOA. Since I was there, I already reserved for a hotel for us to stay in. I went to Will Shire HOTEL to settle for a reservation, but unfortunately they were already full on those dates I did mentioned. I was left with no choice and make a reservation at AMAREA HOTEL which is fortunately did accommodate us for the reservation on those two dates I did prefer. I paid 795 for a one day reservations, and the next day as per mentioned will be paid on the exact date after Friday.

The hours were ticking and the days were changing. As I crossed those days from my calendar before August 17, I did feel tensed each day. When the day arrived, it was August 15, 2014, me and my friend went ahead in order to catch Friday prayer at CDO. We’ve stayed there for two days, while two of my friends had a rigorous flash back of all the review we did back then. As for me, I choose to relax. We all did aside from reviewing were window shopping, buy foods, and more important one is sleeping. We did all this just to relax from our wary minds. Before the exam, I and my friend went to our designated room as to know where our room is before the examination. The PRC already written the things to be needed before the exam.

We didn’t noticed that the day was up. We wake up ourselves at around 3:30 in the morning; review a little bit, eat our breakfast, take a bathe and prepare our things. I was the one who got out since I was assigned at BULUA NATIONAL HIGHSCHOOL which was far from the center. I was so thankful that when I got out at the hotel, a taxi was already have been there, and asked him to get me at the school I’ve been assigned to. Upon arriving, there were so many people in waiting to open the gate. I’ve seen one of my acquaintance, who was familiar to me, but never knew her name. She questioned me while we were both waiting, but it was so fortunate that a friend of mine was there, calling for me. I was relief when she does that because that girl I meet were starting to ask about my workplace, which I don’t want to be much open about it when I am in different situation. We talked with Ms Faida together with her friend about so many things in regard with the LET exams. While waiting there for almost 45 minutes, the door opened and each of us went to our designated room were assigned to. I was amazed the first day I saw my room assignment since all the numbers in seeing were all in 17. Date was August 17, my room was 17, seat number 17 and my name was written on page 17. What a coincidence, I say!

All in Seventeen!
All in Seventeen!

The schedule is all written in this way:

The examination went well after hours of taking them. I could say, I did well on the General and Professional Education but the Specialization were kind of a nose bleed. From the 2,500 test questions we did take at the review center for this specialization area, I ended up only three question similar from our review and everything I did used was stock knowledge. As I review my test paper for second time around that day, I was confident that I did my best, and the only thing left for me is to hope for a positive result for the examination. For those people who is reading this blog of mine. Wish me and everyone who take the test a Good luck!

Learning Assessment Strategies

This post is based on my field study that I did conduct last three months for the year 2014. You may seem not to approve some of this idea, but please correct me if I am wrong. Most of the things contain here were based on my own opinion. I am very welcome to some ideas that you may share on this subject matter. Thank you and hope it will be a help for those people in search for the same studies.

My Tools

As I observe a class, I will use the Observation Sheet for a more focused observation.

OBSERVATION SHEET Number 1

Principles of Learning Assessment Teaching Behavior of the Teacher/Learning Behavior of the Learner as Proof of the Application of the Principle of Learning
  1. Assessment is an integral part of the teaching learning process.

The Teacher gave out a quiz to her students worth 20 points on Basic Geometry Figure and Angles.
  1. Assessment tool/activity should match with performance objective.

The tool that was being used by the teacher was an objective test that blends in with the students’ performance.
  1. The results of assessment must be fed back to the learners.

After the quiz, the teacher let the students check the papers of their fellow classmate, and right after that, was being returned in order for the students to see their score.
  1. Teachers must consider learners’ learning styles and multiple intelligences and so must come up with a variety of ways of assessing learning.

While the teacher was giving out the answers to the students, she was also asking them orally before she explains them that answer to that certain question.
  1. Give some positive feedback along with not so good ones.

The teacher gave out a positive feedback to those students who get good grades and advice those students who didn’t do well to study more.
  1. Emphasize on self assessment.

Upon seeing the scores of each student themselves, they will now realize if they did study will or not. As for the result of the test, the teacher can identify her teaching if she did will or not.
  1. Assessment of learning should never be used as punishment or as disciplinary measure.

The Teacher’s test was not for punishment or as a disciplinary one. A verification whether the student study their lesson or not.
  1. Emphasize on real world application that favors realistic performances over out-of-context drills.

Applicable in the real world, because they will use this basic geometry figures and angles when they go on with their studies and apply it when measuring of shapes are involved.
  1. Results of learning assessment must be communicated regularly to parents.

The teacher did mention that as much as she is capable of. She is indeed letting their parents know their status on their grades.

OBSERVATION SHEET Number 2

Principles of Learning Assessment Teaching Behavior of the Teacher/Learning Behavior of the Learner as Proof of the Application of the Principle of Learning
  1. Assessment is an integral part of the teaching learning process.

The teacher gave out their tentative score, and the result of their assignment for them to verify within their self if the student themselves did their best.
  1. Assessment tool/activity should match with performance objective.

The teacher used assignment in order to assist if the students were doing their homework, and mostly they did. However, this type of assessment is not guaranteed.
  1. The results of assessment must be fed back to the learners.

The teacher handed out the students’ assignment together with their score, as well as their tentative score from their exams.
  1. Teachers must consider learners’ learning styles and multiple intelligences and so must come up with a variety of ways of assessing learning.

That time, the teacher handed them down the result of their assignment and exam results.
  1. Give some positive feedback along with not so good ones.

The teacher didn’t give out any feedback to the students’ result. She just gave the result without saying anything.
  1. Emphasize on self assessment.

Without the feedback from the teacher, the learners are now the one to assess themselves either they do good or not.
  1. Assessment of learning should never be used as punishment or as disciplinary measure.

The teacher somehow doesn’t apply this harsh assessment for the student. It is more on academically.
  1. Emphasize on real world application that favors realistic performances over out-of-context drills.

Since they are in electromagnetic as a topic, they can apply this drill when the students were curious about a certain situation that relates with this topic.
  1. Results of learning assessment must be communicated regularly to parents.

The teacher ask the students to hand out a 1/8 sheet of paper with the student’s name on it, in order for her to write their tentative score and give to their respective parents for them to see.

OBSERVATION SHEET Number 3

Principles of Learning Assessment Teaching Behavior of the Teacher/Learning Behavior of the Learner as Proof of the Application of the Principle of Learning
  1. Assessment is an integral part of the teaching learning process.

The teacher let the student participate in solving problem, making her aware the effectively of her teaching from her students.
  1. Assessment tool/activity should match with performance objective.

The teacher used oral recitations in solving the problem in front of the class that coincide with her tools.
  1. The results of assessment must be fed back to the learners.

Some students didn’t do well, coming up with a wrong answer, making that certain student to be aware to study the lesson more.
  1. Teachers must consider learners’ learning styles and multiple intelligences and so must come up with a variety of ways of assessing learning.

The teacher was driven by her motivation to teach her students, aiming for the student to be more confident and given an ease atmosphere for everyone while answering the problem.
  1. Give some positive feedback along with not so good ones.

The teacher was giving a complement to those students who answered correctly. For those who didn’t do well were given an encouragement to try again from the teacher herself.
  1. Emphasize on self assessment.

The learners’ reaction of being participative mood is an indication that they understand the lesson that was being taught to them by her.
  1. Assessment of learning should never be used as punishment or as disciplinary measure.

The teacher didn’t give the solving problem and letting them to discuss it as a form of punishment, but a review for the upcoming exam. The activity was beneficial for the student.
  1. Emphasize on real world application that favors realistic performances over out-of-context drills.

They will need this lesson for further lessons, and can be applied in their daily life in a certain situation that needed equation, and not to be ignorant when they pass this kind of topic in some mathematic readings.
  1. Results of learning assessment must be communicated regularly to parents.

The teacher give the students’ assignment score, and their result of the examination in order for the kids to show it to their parents.

My Analysis

What are the possible consequences on the teaching-learning process if each of the principles are not observed.

Principles of Learning Assessment Possible Consequences if Principle NOT Observed
1         Assessment is an integral part of the teaching learning process. Teacher won’t know if his/her students are learning well from his/her class.
2         Assessment tool/activity should match with performance objective. The objective of the learning will not meet if the activity/tool didn’t match. The learning objective will be useless, and more confusion for the students.
3         The results of assessment must be fed back to the learners. If this won’t be applied, the learners will assume everything, and therefore there is no room for their realization of doing better in class.
4         Teachers must consider learners’ learning styles and multiple intelligences and so must come up with a variety of ways of assessing learning. It will be unfair for those students who don’t have fast learning skills. Also, students will not develop and enhanced in their respective skills.
5         Give some positive feedback along with not so good ones. If a teacher won’t give a positive feedback the students desire to learn will not raise up.
6         Emphasize on self assessment.

If there is no self-assessment, then there is no room for advance learning.
7         Assessment of learning should never be used as punishment or as disciplinary measure. The learners will develop fear in the class; some student will be forced out of their will. Learning is not about coercing!
8         Emphasize on real world application that favors realistic performances over out-of-context drills. The expectation of the student will not meet. Learners definitely wanted to know if this thing will be useful or not, if it is, learning on their part will be excitement. Higher thinking skills will not be enhanced.
9         Results of learning assessment must be communicated regularly to parents. The parent will assume that their child is doing great at their school. No advice that will come out for them for their child and it will be unfair to them. No transparency and accountability to reflect on.

   My Reflections

As a student, do I remember any incident when any of these principles was/were violated by my teachers? How did it affect my classmates and me?

  • Yes, there were some. As far as I remember, there was that one instances where in, we as a students were very noisy, the teacher can’t help it but to reach her temper in a maximum level, and out of her irritation, she gave us a quiz as a form of punishment on our part. In this, she violated the number 7 principle “Assessment of learning should never be used as punishment or as disciplinary measure.”

My Portfolio

Present the principles of assessment of learning in a very creative way.

LET’S CRAFT THE CURRICULUM

This post is based on my field study that I did conduct last three months for the year 2014. You may seem not to approve some of this idea, but please correct me if I am wrong. Most of the things contain here were based on my own opinion. I am very welcome to some ideas that you may share on this subject matter. Thank you and hope it will be a help for those people in search for the same studies.

My Map

To reach my target, I should do these steps:

  1. Observe a class.
  2. Identify the curriculum design used by schools.
  3. Reflect and write my insights/learning gained from the activities.

My Tools

A curriculum can be organized either horizontally or vertically. Write samples of them on the illustrations.

Horizontal

Sample Activities

TASK 1: Listen to the text. Take note of examples of intolerance discrimination and prejudice.

TASK 2: Recall the bases of evaluating the relevance and validity of ideas.

  1. Your personal observation or experience
  2. Personal interviews with knowledgeable person or authoritative sources
  3. Current publications and other reference materials.

TASK 3: Do you agree that…(Ask the student to explain his/her answer.

  1. “One reason fights are started is that one person cannot let another be different.”
  2. “We do not carry much of the prejudice and discrimination of yesteryears.”
  3. “Today we have become tolerant of others.”

 Vertical

 Sample

1st year Grammar: Use indirect discourse to report request to commands and advice.

Activities:

  • Divide the class into small groups and have them give the advice, commands or requests they would give or make in these situation (direct discourse). The other groups are to give in reported speech what was said.
  • Transformation drill on direct and indirect discourse (Imperatives: requests, commands, advice) in problem situations.

2nd year Grammar: Direct and reported Speech Giving Instructions, Commands, Request.

Activities: Transform the following direct statements to reported statements.

3rd years Grammar: Give and follow instructions using direct and reported speech.

Activities: Round table discussion about agreeing and disagreeing in a given topic.

4th year Grammar:

  1. Make requests, commands using indirect speech.
  2. Give an advice and get things done using reported speech.

Activities

  • Changing Imperatives from direct to indirect discourse
  • Giving advice and instructions to get things done.

A spiral concept of the curriculum provides for both horizontal (widening of knowledge) and vertical (deepening of knowledge) aspects of the curriculum design simultaneously. The figure below shows the concept of horizontal and vertical articulation from preschool to adult.

hv

My Analysis

  1. Examine the Basic Education Curriculum. What aspect do you want to modify. Why?
  • The Basic Education Curriculum that was mentioned from the facts that I did read contains a very concise and direct way of handling students in relation to their own learning, it almost cover all aspect of developing the kids into a rightful citizen of the Philippines. However, from all that details given in the said curriculum, I guess there is something that should be addressed that I want it to be modified in this kind of curriculum. I wanted to give an indication on the objective of this curriculum. I would like to add and give a big importance on the spiritual aspect of the students. Since, I am a Muslim born, and my knowledge in relation to my religion is not wide enough, and for this reason there is lacking in me that taught me the importance of God in our life. In the part of the students, while they are young it is an opportunity to teach them religion in a high regard and integrate it with every lesson.
  1. What curriculum models do you prefer? Why?
  • From the three designs that were mentioned in the book, I prefer Problem-Centered Design, which draws on social problems, needs, interest and abilities of the learners. I love to implement this kind of design in a certain curriculum because of its salient feature that tries to let the students’ abilities blossom into a full realization. Students today don’t like to spoon feeding type of learning; they want challenges in a certain manner, something new that they can set their motivation on. Creating such atmosphere will give them a boost to realize their realization on a certain act. Through this kind of curriculum, the learner will be totally introduce to a more real life situation that will not caught unprepared in the future they want partake.

See and Say

This post is based on my field study that I did conduct last three months for the year 2014. You may seem not to approve some of this idea, but please correct me if I am wrong. Most of the things contain here were based on my own opinion. I am very welcome to some ideas that you may share on this subject matter. Thank you and hope it will be a help for those people in search for the same studies.

My Map

To reach your target, follow the steps below:

Step 1: Observe a class on the regular schedule.

Step 2: Note down the various teaching aids that were utilized in the teaching learning process.

Step 3: Comment on the appropriateness of the teaching aids to the learning asks.
Step 4: Reflect on your learning.

My Tools

As you observe the ckass use the activity forms provided for you to document your observations.

Class Observation Guide

Read the following statements carefully before you observe.

  1. What is the lesson about?
  2. What visual aids/materials/learning resource is the teacher using?
  3. Observe and take notes on how the teacher presents/uses the learning resources.
  4. Closely observe the learner’s response to the teacher’s use of the learning resources. Listen to their verbal responses. What do their responses indicate? Do their responses show attentiveness, eagerness and understanding?

Focus on their non-verbal responses. Are they learning forward showing their interest on the lesson and the materials? Are they looking towards the direction of the teacher and the materials? Do their actions show attentiveness, eagerness and understanding?

Class Observation

Preschooler on Learning Side
Preschooler on Learning Side

For a couple of Sundays, I and my co-classmates did observed classes from different grade levels. It was kind enough that Ma’am Imelda Mamangconi, the Principal of AKIC-SLS was very accommodating towards our observation at their school. On this regard, I am indeed choosing the preschooler as my area of observation on this episode of FS 3 due to so many reasons.

Every classes has their own way of Instructional Materials, and they indeed show a different kinds of IMs, but what I am amazed the most was the preschoolers’ Instructional Materials. They have this colourful class that you can almost see different colour from different areas from their classroom. If I could compare them from the higher level, theirs were the most outstanding than any other. Perhaps, this is due to their standing point as a new learner, which most of what they encounter is very new to them. Preschoolers have the most sensitive senses among the learners, and they still need a lot of things in order to understand some of their environment. In order to introduce this to them, teachers are required to show them what is attracting for the children in a more fun, colourful and innovative way.

The class I did observed last February 16, 2014 was a senior kindergarten section Saturn. When I did enter to their classroom, I did ask a permission from the assistant teacher named Rahman Abdullah, a graduate of MSU-Main with a course of AB-Filipino. I told her that I was given consent from the principal to observe their classes, with a warm welcome, she indeed let me in inside their rooms and to my surprise I just “wow” myself from those things that were being displayed inside their room. Upon entering, everybody of them greeted me with a loud voice and an additional charming coming from the children. Below this are some pictures of Instructional materials within the class the I did gathered:

I’ll be enumerating some of their set Instructional Materials Inside. Let me have first the teacher, for they are a best IM for the learners. The Section that I did go to was under Ms. Norjannah K. Hadji Ali, the coordinator of the preschooler department. The teacher there was then their Arabic teacher. As she started her class, she did give out a loud and clear voice. She instructed the students to read the Arabic alphabets. All the preschoolers, obeyed as per instructed by the teacher wilfully, and as I view from the way they read, they seem to really familiarized and memorized almost all the Arabic alphabets. The teacher then gave out an activity that will ensure that the learner get the idea and learned it through instructing them to give an example of every Arabic letter that she would show to them. This answering portion was teamed up by group called: Green, Red, Yellow, and the Blue Team. To give them motivation, the teacher used the star as a way of recognizing their effort. Most of the students were really participating; some of them sometimes over do their action by giving the answer without the teacher’s permission. The way the teacher speaks was really loud and clear, which can be understood by the students well, and her projection was really good. This goes as well to the Assistant Teacher Ms. Rahma Abdullah, who gives out a very interesting friendly aura for the students, and always making herself clear.

For those things inside the classroom, they gave out a friendly environment for the kids. The set instructional materials were very clear and colourful for the preschoolers to be more interested. There is that certain part in their classroom, where plastic boxes were in shelves. We indeed ask about this to a certain teacher about those and she mentioned that those boxes were children extra shirts and materials just in case they get their self dirty along their school days. These materials were already instructed to the parents to buy those things for their kids for the whole school year.

Beside this boxes were a table containing some colour cups for the kids. These IMs were being used for the specific kids who like to have a different snack during their recess time. During that period, the school is providing some snacks for the kids. However, there are those kids who are very picky in relation to what they eat, so this idea were being made up in order to cater the other needs of the kids.

After these IMs, one single computer was being set up at the back. This is used by the teacher in making their examination for the kids. All the preschoolers’ teachers were welcome to use this computer for school purposes.

There are three tables that you can observe from this room. Two tables located at back and one table at the front. The said table located in front was table of the preschool coordinators Ms. Norjannah, and the remaining two were for the assistant teacher and a teacher.

Next Instructional Materials to be mentioned were their activity notebooks and books. There activity notebooks can be seen in one area of the room, and this is located at the back. It can be noticed in their two coloured kinds of notebooks for every kid, an orange and the red one. Their activities books were being separated and placed in front, near the table of the teacher coordinator.

The colour chart and letters were everywhere. They were being made creatively by the teacher for the kids to be motivated. The whole room were well ventilated and it was a light paint colour was being used inside the said classroom.

The other IM’s that it could include in this are the table which consist of 16 tables and each table were occupied by two preschoolers. Shoe rock was also available in the said classroom. The school didn’t meet with the standard form of a classroom since they have this one single door for exit and entrance area. The black board was not your typical board for a starter, but a white board.

UTILIZATION OF TEACHING AIDS FORMS

Grade or Year Level of Class Observed: Senior Kindergarten Section Saturn
Date of Observation: February 16, 2014
Subject Matter: Arabic, Number, and Reading
Brief Description of Teaching Approach Used by the Teacher: Directive Approach

Teaching Aids used

(Enumerate in bullet forms)

Strengths

Weaknesses

Comments on Appropriateness of the Teaching Aids used.

  • Teacher

They are well groomed, and they use a more friendly approach when they teach kids.

Teaching would not be effective when they aren’t sensitive.

I guess some teacher should learn how to be friendlier to the kids and be more compassionate to them.

  • Shoe Rock
This can teach the kids how to be more organized. Can be a destructing when it is placed inside the room. I suggest this should be placed outside the school room.
  • Chart
It can be an additional learning for the curiosity of the kids. Lack of organization. Chart should be well organized in a manner that the kids would get their attention.
  • English & Arabic Alphabets
It helps for the familiarization skills of the kids in relation to alphabets Can’t see its weakness. Visibly clear for the kids to see in a far distance.
  • Computer
This helps the kid’s examination to be readable through the use of its font, and can be used in preparing things for the kids. The computer they have should be placed in a safer area. It would be nice if the computer can also use a decoration that could blend in with the atmosphere in class.
  • Table
This gives a proper place for the teacher to work on their needs for their kids. Too much things on top of the table. The teacher is a model. Somehow, he/she has an obligation to clean her table up as a proper way of showing the kids of being an organized adult.
  • Activity Notebooks
This helps the kids to collect their portfolio in a more colourful way. Can’t see any weakness Their IMS in this was good since it helps the kids to recognize their needed activities for that certain issue.
  • Activity Books
Same with the Notebooks. This helps the kids to get the answer in a more clear view. Can’t see any weakness. This book should place together with the notebook in one place.
  • Hygiene Box
It helps to keep the cleanliness of a child. The box should always be monitored for lacking materials. The school gave out a good idea in addressing the individual needs of the kids.
  • Coloured Cups
It caters the other needs of the kids when recess takes over. The cups should be covered. Kids should be protected even in those things they are using. The school gave out an alternative supplies for the kids’ needs.
  • White Blackboard
Easier for the educator to teach the kids using them. It is kind of advance. Not be fitting for the preschoolers. The IM’s for the kids could be great if they use a board with lines.
  • Wall Paper
Gives an attraction for the kids. Too many colours It would be nice if they used a fixed colour.
  • Ventilation
It is well light up. Can’t see any weakness. For the reason that they are much closed door. They need to avail an extra light in case of brownout while the lesson is in session.

My Analysis

What do you think prompted the teacher to choose the material/learning resources that she/he used?

In view of the fact that the teachers were dealing kids, I guess they prompted their self to use a more creative way of making their class room colourful and full of different kinds of learning chart. This is in consideration that kids love brighter things that their eyes can set on. Teachers were also being innovative in thinking other alternatives that could possibly cater the other kids’ needs on hand.

What difficulties, if any, did the teacher experience? How can this be managed?

The assistant once told me a certain difficulties that preschool teachers can encounter and one of this is when the kids started their first day of classes. At first, they were very vulnerable, some of them would run to their parents nor would cry because of some unfamiliar faces that surrounds them. This gives a hard time for the teachers, and they are complied to sort this out through thinking how to get that fear from the kids of going out and go to school. Furthermore, when the kids goes to school some of them don’t have any idea of doing a certain basic action like how to toothbrush their teeth, what to do when they are at the comfort and so many things. This leads for the teacher to nurse them, and teach them the appropriate action that needs to be done on that certain deed.

Over-all, were the learning resources/materials used effectively? Why? Why not?

Yes, I could say they are effective. The way I did observed the kids were very lively at their room. In relation to their portfolios and their needs, they know what to use and where to get it. Based on their Arabic lesson that day, they seem to understand and familiarize will enough about their Arabic lesson. They are very enthusiastically giving out a chorus answer which I could determine it as a sign of learned lesson on their part. They seem to be diligent enough about the things that surround them. In their Math lesson, the kids even has the ability to recognize months, and days during their lecture, and this might be thanks to their IMs of months and days that were being displayed in front of them. I wouldn’t say it isn’t effective since it is far more obvious the way the children lively cooperating with their teachers. The educator themselves really do know how to handle them, and even give some thoughts about giving them an extra tender, loving, care for the kids.

My Reflections

  1. Put yourself in the place of the teacher. What you do similarly and what would you do differently if you would teach the same lesson to the same group of students? Why?

I would probably do the same like teaching them the appropriate manner of doing things, teach them with loud and clear voice, and be friendlier with them. I do also need to stabilize balance instructional materials inside the classroom. Nevertheless, I will probably need to address more activities that would highly need participation from everyone in the classroom.

When I was a student, I was the silent type, but as the time goes on I do realize that guts or self confidence is the most important aspect in one’s career and this thing is something that I want to cultivate from the students to be enhanced. In addition for the preschooler, if there will be a waiting time for them, I would highly recommend telling them stories as to use the time of their waiting into developing their creativity or should we easy imaginary skills at the young age.

My Portfolio

Include here pictures/Illustration of the materials used by the teacher. Put your comments/annotation about that you observed.

The following pictures are the things being set up or used by the preschooler teacher as materials inside their classroom.

Preschooler at rest
Preschooler at rest

Using a white board inside the classroom can be treated as a good way of using it as an instructional material since it is easy, clear and not messy kind thing to use. However, the only defect in this regard is that preschooler are a beginner, I guess it would be appropriate to introduce the basic, a blackboard with line. This would give them the idea about the importance of writing in an appropriate manner through making it up straight which they can reflect it on their pads.

Using imagery in learning as your instructional material is a best way to teach kids because, they like images. This kind of IM would exceed if the instructor put some colours in her output.

Inside the Classroom

This is my first time to enter a preschooler classroom, and I could say it is an impressive one since most of the kids’ needs were already being set up in there.

Wider range for kids!

My Tool

As I observe a class, I will use the Observation Sheet for a more focused observation.

OBSERVATION SHEET Number 1
Principles of Learning Teaching Behaviour of the Teacher/Learning Behaviour of the Learner as Proof of the Application of the Principle of Learning.
  1. Learning is an experience which occurs inside the learner and is activated by the learner.
The teacher discussed all the topics in relation to their lesson, and the quiz that was given. Some students were very participative.
  1. Learning is the discovery of the personal meaning and relevance of ideas.
Teacher answered those test questions verbally in front of the students in order to let the student assist their answers. E.g The Students realized the importance of preparing one’s self before exam.
  1. Learning is a consequence of experience.
Assessing children in their learning and mixing different kinds of strategies is an edge. The teacher gave out a quiz based on their lesson last week, and answers them afterwards by calling some students to verify their answers. Some students were disappointed due to low scores they did receive.
  1. Learning is a cooperative and collaborative process.
The teacher was very enthusiast and alive in giving instructions to the student and even giving out an examination.

The students were drawn from the teacher’s energy and followed her instructions accordingly and even giving out their answers wilful during the question and answer portion.

  1. Learning is an evolutionary process.
The teacher’s action becomes evolutionary since she adopts multiple tasks within the one hour session. She even diligently deals with her grade 5 students with the level of their abilities and skills.
  1. Learning is sometimes a painful process.
Learners were given a certain quiz but it becomes painful for them when they didn’t prepare for it even though the instructor told them about the quiz ahead of time. The students who didn’t do well realize the consequence of not studying before the quiz.
  1. One of the richest resources for the learning is the learner himself.
The teacher let the students’ answers through asking them while assessing each other’s papers.

The students were raising their hands while the teacher was giving out the question in class.

  1. The process of learning is emotional as well as intellectual.
The teacher was starting her class through giving out a friendlier expression. The possible reason is in order to set a friendlier atmosphere while giving out a quiz for the kids, and get the tension out of the students’ shoulders.
  1. The process of problem solving and learning are highly unique and individual.
The teacher was discussing the basic angles and geometric figures by details were somehow highly unique especially in a way the teachers present her teaching. In terms of the student, some were giving their best out to answer their teacher’s question.
OBSERVATION SHEET Number 2
Principles of Learning Teaching Behaviour of the Teacher/Learning Behaviour of the Learner as Proof of the Application of the Principle of Learning.
  1. Learning is an experience which occurs inside the learner and is activated by the learner.
The Teacher let the student answers the chemical equation based on their learning the previously.
  1. Learning is the discovery of the personal meaning and relevance of ideas.
The teacher discussed previously the topic about chemistry formula, and she let the student answer some formula written in the black board. After this she let her student to explain the answer in front of their classmates.
  1. Learning is a consequence of experience.
One learner didn’t answer the assigned equation very well, letting herself to solve it again. A consequence that when you don’t understand the lesson well, one tends to come up with a wrong answer.
  1. Learning is a cooperative and collaborative process.
The learner’s were not participative, but the teacher groups them to answer the chemical formula, letting them to choose one of them to discuss their answer infront.
  1. Learning is an evolutionary process.
Most of the students do have a lot of question about the written formula, but the teacher tried to explain it further.
  1. Learning is sometimes a painful process.
One student was suddenly asked about a certain formula but came up being quite and left the question unanswered.
  1. One of the richest resources for the learning is the learner himself.
Most of the learners do well in answering the equation, giving them more confidence within their self.
  1. The process of learning is emotional as well as intellectual.
The learners’ correct answer makes them happy and build up some confidence within them
  1. The process of problem solving and learning are highly unique and individual.
Answering a complicated equation gave the learner a hard time to come up to the final answer. However, when they arrived correctly to the right answer, feeling of happiness felt.
OBSERVATION SHEET Number 3
Principles of Learning Teaching Behaviour of the Teacher/Learning Behaviour of the Learner as Proof of the Application of the Principle of Learning.
  1. Learning is an experience which occurs inside the learner and is activated by the learner.
The Teacher let the student to answer the mathematical equation, and the learner began to solve the given problem based on their understanding.
  1. Learning is the discovery of the personal meaning and relevance of ideas.
The teacher let her student solve the problem in front of the black board and make them explained the answer they presented.
  1. Learning is a consequence of experience.
Some of the learners were able to answer in front, and upon answering some aren’t well prepared and realized the consequence of being unprepared.
  1. Learning is a cooperative and collaborative process.
The learners were raising their hand, cooperatively wanting to solve the problem on their own.
  1. Learning is an evolutionary process.
The teacher exerts a lot of effort giving more motivation to her student, and does a multi tasking while the lesson was on going.
  1. Learning is sometimes a painful process.
Those learners who didn’t do very well were somehow learned the consequence, and one of this was not to be able to answer the problem in front of her fellow classmates.
  1. One of the richest resources for the learning is the learner himself.
Most of the learners were raising their hand signifying the fact that most of them do well and understand the lesson and some even explained it very well.
  1. The process of learning is emotional as well as intellectual.
As I observed, the teacher were enthusiast, and most willing to give a lesson to them making her student participative and radiate her enthusiast attitude towards her students.
  1. The process of problem solving and learning are highly unique and individual.
The learners’ solve the problem very well and well understood by them. Some learners could even teach to her seat meet that didn’t seem to understand the lesson well.

My Analysis

  1. What is the impact of the Resource Teacher’s observance of these principles on the teaching-learning process and on the learners?
    • To become an efficient educator you need to consider these principles in your way of teaching. It is not easy to be an educator since you cannot just do what you want in teaching children, it’s not. Many things need to be considered. If one teacher wanted to have a strong foundation in her/his own teaching and implant a very great impact to his/her students then this is the answer. One of the teachers that I did indeed observe somehow implements these principles. I could say not all but most of them. This can be signifies how her learners reacts from the way she teach, and the way learner’s enjoy her class. For the learners, skills and abilities are not one day growth; it is a step by step process. The learners don’t really have the idea about these principles, but looking at them, they are indeed very active in cooperating with their teacher. An atmosphere of ease was surrounded in whole class, where teaching can be more fun for the students as well as ease in acquiring the knowledge needed.

RELATED BOOKS ON EDUCATION AND TEACHING

  1. Which learning principle was applied most?
  • As I observed, the most applied principle on that day were “learning is a consequence of experience” and “Learning is a cooperative and collaborative process”. As what I had explained from my previews statement, that most of the student were very active in participating, a very cooperative one. The teacher was also enjoying her class. In the quiz, which was given on that day, some of the student didn’t have a higher score which possibly made them realize that they need to study more.
  1. Which learning principle was applied least or not at all applied?
  • The learning principle that was applied least from all the principles was the number seven, “One of the richest resources for the learning is the learner himself”. In this situation, teacher mostly facilitates with the learning for the students and they, the students, are the one who gives some ideas about a certain topic. In relation to the class that I did observed, this thing were least used. Mostly of the class was being done by the teacher herself.
  1. Do you agree with these principles of learning? Or have you discovered that they are not always correct?
  • Yes, I do agree with these principles. A principle in a certain area of subject is a very important factor that can be used in determining a certain facts. In education, the enumerated principles can be used in studying a certain schools if they are doing what exactly supposed to be an act of teaching kids. The status of how the teachers and learners do can easily be determined. For the further advancement of a certain school, this could be a basis of studying the area of learning should be changed or need some improvements in terms of executing the subject to be tackled in every class.
  1. Lessons I have learned from my observations on the classroom application of the principles of learning.
  • The thing that I’ve learned from my observation is the fact that a teacher should be aware in using these principles in order to be an effective educator.

My Reflections

My reflections on my observations of my Resource Teacher’s observance of these principles. Did my Resource Teachers adhere to these principles?

In the short period of time observing the teachers at AKIC- SLS, I could say that they are adhering these principles well. As seen from their students, they are really well participating and seem to enjoying their class very well. One teacher was very effective in implementing these principles as a whole since you can distinguish how she conducts her class. She can create a well balanced classroom, an environment full of energy, and made the students get motivated in participating inside the class. As an observer and as a person, you can sense in a certain situation about things that seems wrong. From that observation, and sitting in that particular class made me feel of going back from being a student. A feeling of that kind of atmosphere, were you can feel the enjoyment of learning, and being drawn by the teacher’s energy and enthusiasm; that feeling of getting those lessons inside your head without coercing your mind to learn it, that feeling of learning from the mistakes that indeed committed on that day, and thinking of doing good the next time around. This feeling that felt on that day is an experience that these typical principles were being implemented.

The learning’s goal is to give the children what they need, and make them realize things that they could not gain outside the class with guidance of a teacher. The teachers need to present these principles if he/she wanted to make her/his students feel the essence of true learning. Not adhering with these principles will give one’s learner an incomplete learning experience on their part. The development of their thinking skills and the importance of the topic being learned will not be achieved. From the way it looks, this is the importance of these said principles. The teacher that I did observed even gave assessment on her students’ skills which it can be a help in knowing the feedback of her teaching from her students, either it’s effective or not. The learners’ interest should be in the top priority, so as an educator, we need to adopt on everything that is needed in order to fully utilize all the tools that is needed to let them experience the best of learning.

My Portfolio

Principles of Learning in My Own Words.

  1. Learning is teaching kids with the things they aren’t well aware off and making the students interpret of the things they did understand from the lessons.
  2. Learning is knowing something that is beyond ones understanding, and the relationship of this idea to the real life of the students.
  3. Learning is something about learning ones mistake, and the making a correct decision and analysis over something.
  4. Learning is sharing of ideas through teachers, and with highly participation of the students.
  5. Learning should be multi tasking due to changes pace of time.
  6. Learning is not a punishment or discipline that the students should practiced, but the realization of getting your dream with a sacrifice for a successful life.
  7. A student should participate of sharing their ideas/opinion in a class.
  8. Teachers and Learners’ abilities can be measured up through their psychological, sociological, emotional, and intellectual aspects.
  9. Learning should involve high thinking skills in order for each student to be developed in advance regardless of their differences, and considered a certain materials based on their multiple intelligence.
